There are two things that are always mentioned when talk turns to the quality of Blackpool stanley park golf club. 1: it's a great little course, wonderfully designed (by Alistair McKenzie of Augusta fame, no less), and 2: it's in terrible condition.
When you play you will experience varied terrain and styles of hole, from seemingly innocuous par 3s, short par 5s and some very, very nicely designed par 4s. What lets the course down is its condition. If the greens and tees were looked after properly, if the drainage was maintained better, you could expect the course to charge more - It's potential is quite frankly humungous - but they aren't, so expect inconsistent greens, bare tees and random wet spots.
It is worth a visit - but make it around the week of the main open comp, the Silver Niblick, July time. The course is in its best condition then and you'd be happy to have paid the £16-18 for a round.
What is consistently excellent is the restaurant and food in the clubhouse. I can honestly say I've never had anything to complain about. They have a varied menu of food that's freshly made and at a fair
price, and very good service too.
So, all in all the three stars is buoyed by the quality of the clubhouse experience, because the golf for the majority of the year is mediocre at best. You make of your round what you can, obviously, but from an objective point of view I believe this to be a fair assessment.
