We have received nothing short of excellent care this week from paramedics and the A&E staff at Stepping Hill. A special shout out to Shauna who was our A&E nurse - she is an absolute legend and kept two freaked out people going in a difficult situation combining absolute professionalism with kindness and humour. I hope this message reaches you - thank you, thank you, thank you. I hope you finally got your break and managed to ditch the wellies!!

This review may sound more like a long drawn out story but what I want to highlight is the the speed as to which I was seen, scanned, tested operated on and the incredible care I received during my stay in hospital.

I was referred to Stepping Hill in May 2018 through the urgent referral system after a suspected cancerous tumour was detected in my abdomen during an ultrasound. I had my first assessment with a consultant within 2-3 weeks as well as my first CT scan.

I contacted the medical secretary a short time after the CT to see if my results were available and was told that my consultant was away but that a registrar would be in touch, the next day I was asked to attend a meeting with the registrar to discuss the results. I attended the appointment in the SAU where I received the news that the tumour I had was almost definitely cancer. The staff were amazing, they did further blood tests there and then and managed to get me in for a 2nd CT scan on the same day.

The following Friday I had an appointment to see my original consultant and was told that the surgery to remove the tumour had been scheduled for the following Tuesday with admission on to the SSU on the Monday beforehand.

During my stay I spent 1 night in the SSU, 6 days in HDU, a total of 8 days in ward D6, a night in A&E and most of 1 day in the SAU.

I cannot begin to explain just how amazing everyone and everything was. Everyone that I came in to contact with and I mean everyone, from the nurses, nursing assistants, the anaesthesiologist, the porters, the students, the surgeons, consultants, the cleaners, medical secretaries, the radiologists, and more were absolutely incredible.

It has stuck in my mind even now at almost 5 weeks later at just how much the staff here meant to me during my stay and afterwards. They were reassuring, professional, caring, kind, they made me laugh, made me feel better when I cried, encouraged me, made the time to speak to my family during their visits, went out of their way to make me feel happy and comfortable all the while providing me with fantastic levels of care - which has carried on since I have been home with contact I have had with nursing and secretarial staff.

If I could individually thank or ensure that all the staff I came in to contact with could read this, I would love for them to know how much all of their hard work is appreciated and how it has left a lasting mark with me.

The NHS is fanastic and so is this hospital - your staff are a

credit to you! And I thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done for me.

Spent 6 days on D1 ward the staff were absolutely amazing, at every level from cleaners up. I was stuck in bed on iv drips but seeing the level of care with such enthusiasm & how each patients individual needs were met even those with not just physical ailments was absolutely phenomenal

My 2 year old son has been in Stepping Hill on a few occasions in the children’s ward and in A&E with breathing issues and the support and help the nurses and doctors give you is unbelievable. The services they provide are excellent and should not be taken for granted, we are very lucky to have the NHS and the amazing people that work for it.

User

I’ve had two children at Stepping Hill, one at the birthing centre and one on the delivery suite. I’ve also visited maternity triage. In my experience, all the maternity services have been outstanding, from the midwives I’ve spoken to on the phone with minor worries, to the midwives who looked after us, to the lovely lady who brought be tea and toast - all absolute diamonds. I honestly don’t know how you do that job, especially under the pressure you’re under, but twice I’ve had great care, compassion and understanding. Thank you xx

I work for NHS England but my father-in-law is an inpatient on C6 following an emergency admission a week ago. The care has been amazing from A&E, resus, C3 and now C6. He has early dementia and today I called on the services of the Dementia Matron Florence as my father-in-law was very fidgety. She went right away to the ward and provided him with two fidgety mitts and gave some great advice to his son and my mother-in-law. She even wrote in his notes asking the nurses to give him the mitts when he gets agitated and to get him up and moving. She even rang me to update me. She has been amazing and we would all like to thank her for her kindness today.

I was in Stepping Hill with my mum yesterday after she took a tumble while she was out shopping. All the staff were amazing. A massive thank you to all the hard working nurses, doctor and paramedics, I'm sorry I forgot to take note of your names. She's now resting and recovering at home and hopefully her fracture will mend quickly.

User

I was admitted to the trauma ward d1 yesterday xx the staff are really lovely they couldn't do enough for me x they were so busy but found time for us all can't fault them excellent xx

User

I had my little boy at stepping hill on Halloween, after having a traumatic birth with my daughter, I was apprehensive about having to get through labour again. I can honestly say that the staff on maternity triage and delivery suite were exceptional, the doctors explained and consulted me about my options and the staff never left my side. I was lucky to have two midwives one being a trainee who delivered my son; the compassion, support and encouragement was second to none and helped me calmly bring my baby boy into the world. I don’t think your team are recognised and rewarded for the good work they do enough, but they ensured I was safe, my health was paramount and as well as adhering to procedures provided emotional support and encouragement! Thank you xx

User

I had my 3rd baby at Stepping Hill last week and can honestly say the whole experience from pregnancy to being discharged after the birth was a thoroughly positive experience! My previous child was born 11 years ago and I feel that the unit has improved dramatically in this time and the care I received was second to none!

The midwives that delivered my baby (Amanda and Audrey) were simply brilliant, the support they gave me and my husband was much appreciated and they were so friendly and caring! The Anaesthetist that gave me advice on pain relief (I think his name was Michael) was also fab, he explained everything to me and then held my hand through some particularly painful contractions!

I only spent 10 hours on the ward after my labour but all of the midwives, students and support staff there were great. I feel they all went above and beyond to offer help and advice. I must add that it was very busy during our stay, the unit had to close for part of the time! But I think all of the staff still gave us the care and attention we needed despite being rushed off their feet!

And finally we have had an appt today at the infant feeding clinic due to tongue tie. Once again the staff were great and I could not fault the care they gave our daughter and ourselves. I am grateful to everyone involved and would like them all to know that they are a credit to the NHS.

User

I had an op on my Carpal Tunnel yesterday and i have to say everyone on Ward D5 was lovely and very kind. In fact everyone in theatre was nice too. Thank you guys.

User

I gave birth in the birthing centre at stepping hill 10 days ago. The care and support I received whilst in labour and whilst delivering my daughter was absolutely incredible the midwives and assistants were simply amazing and made our special day go as well as it possibly could have, so thank you very much to Alison Hulme who delivered my princess and all the other midwives and team who helped along the way you are all amazing and deserve so much more recognition and appreciation :)

User

Attended twice this week. First D5 surgical short stay with my mum. The nursing staff were friendly, professional and very compassionate. The ward ran like clockwork and was beautifully clean.

Second appointment in the Treehouse children's department with my daughter. Again the staff were both friendly and helpful, clean environment and the toys were clean. Super medical team who took time to listen to an anxious mum without rushing through the appointment.

I feel very lucky having Stepping Hill Hospital as my local hospital, CQC could award outstanding in my mind !

Thank you all the hard working staff you are much appreciated

User

A big thank you to the staff in a&e last night for the care they gave to my mum last night also the staff on the acute surgical unit. My mum has dementia and they really looked after here and also me as well.

User

The service was a bit slow but totally understandable with the amount of money/staff down, could not fault any of the staff! Surgeons, Anastasia, NURSES, cleaners. Everyone was so professional and caring.... nothing was too much for them <3

User

My daughter had great care at children's A&E last week. She had chest pain and tingling in her arm - we were seen promptly, had an ecg within 10 minutes to rule out any heart problems. Our doctor explained everything clearly and had a great bedside manner with my daughter. Thank goodness it wasn't serious - just inflammation of the cartilage in her chest. Many thanks.

User

I was diagnosed with bowel cancer, no symptoms, and the whole process was outstanding except I was called in, prepared overnight, put on a drip then told in the morning no high dependency bed was available and sent home, as a result of the preparation in hospital I had a blockage and then the operation became an emergency. This would not have happened if there were more high dependency beds and the hospital was properly funded. Sadly nobody managing the hospital cares.

As a qualified Phlebotomist I called Stepping Hill Hospital this morning in the hope to get some information or sign posting to the correct Department about jobs in this field as nothing is showing on their job websites or NHS Trust pages.

The two separate NHS receptionist staff I spoke with were extremely unhelpful and rude, speaking over you mid sentence and not even listening to your query. My call was cut off twice once transferred to heaven knows which Department.!

When I rang back the receptionist rudely said... I quote "Nothing to do with us, we are just trying to answer as many calls as possible in a day as we have targets to get through". My call was then promptly cut off a third time again!

Stockport NHS Trust Foundation, is this the kind of staff you employ and service they get paid for? What happened to delivering excellent Customer Services, bearing in mind that they are the first point of contact and the face of Stockport NHS Trust Foundation and Stepping Hill Hospital itself??

This has left a very negative impression on me today, not to mention the bad experience and wasted phone calls.

Sufferd from fibroids for 5 years. Poor quality of life. This hospital don’t care! All about saving money. Was born here and had both my children here. Been forced to go to a different hospital.
