About The Pace Centre, For Children With Motor Disorders

Founded in 1990 Pace is a ground-breaking children’s charity that transforms the lives of children and young people with physical disabilities.

The Pace Centre, For Children With Motor Disorders Description

Delivering first class education and therapy for children 0-18 year who have sensory motor disorders such as cerebral palsy. Fundamental to our approach is a belief in every child’s ability to learn and and develop new skills, whatever the physical or sensory challenges they face. Our overriding goal is to help children and young people with physical disabilities to achieve their full potential and to be as independent as possible in their current and future lives.

People with severe speech or language difficulties use various AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) methods to supplement existing speech or replace speech for those who are non-verbal. Special augmentative aids, such as picture symbol communication books and electronic devices, are available to help people express themselves. Use of AAC also increases social interaction, school performance, and feelings of self-worth. October is AAC awareness month and we droppe...d in to see how 4 year old Safiya was doing…
Safiya has been learning to use symbols to communicate and her sessions with Laurel Allen, our lead speech and language therapist at Pace, enable both Safiya and her mum to get to grips with both a paper-based system and technology. Through independent, manageable movements using large switches to scan and select, Safiya is able to communicate with the world around her- from basic needs, to directing her own play by letting people know she really wants to give her doll a bath and commenting on her feelings, the world is gradually opening up to her and becoming a more accessible place.
“Safiya has taken this new technology on board so quickly, and we know that with regular sessions for her and her mum over the coming weeks and months, we will be able to give Safiya far greater independence, confidence and self-esteem. Assisting children with potentially huge barriers to the outside world, overcome them with intensive support, perseverance and the help of technology is so very necessary. Our children and families are truly inspirational.” Laurel Allen, Lead Speech and Language Therapist @ Pace
Pace is currently developing plans to become a smart school, really focusing on leveraging technology so that our children can reach their true potential.
