History of our pub:

This Wetherspoon pub is the former Princess Cinema. Built in c1914, it was originally called the Princess Picture House.

Some picture houses had very plush interiors, complete with their own orchestra, cafe and even a crache. They were so grand that people nicknamed them 'picture palaces'. It was the so-called 'golden age' of the silver screen.

Visited for lunch on a Tuesday during May half term as 2 adults and 4 children. There was a little wait for food but it was dead when we arrived but there seemed to be load of people arrive all at once ordering food so it explains it. I love the layout of this wetherspoons all being on different floors. The staff were nice and friendly and the food was great. I had the Bombay hot dog for the first time and loved it.

User

Very well organised place..the manager does not let the grass grow under his feet..he is clearing tables as soon as people have left ...making sure people have clean tables to drink/dine on...I wish the manager of the Sandbach spoons (our local) would take a leaf out of Ians book..we visit the North Wales Coast about twice a week and always make sure we end up at Colwyn Bay Wethetspoons as it is always spot on...well done, keep up the good work!

User

The staff were really pleasant and helpful. Food and the wine both nice

User

Great place, highly recommended 😀👍. A wonderful building, friendly staff, prompt polite service, everything you’d want from a Wetherspoons. We are in North Wales for 4 nights and we’ve already spent the first two in The Picture House!!😀. We’ll probably visit once more before we go home

User

First visit......good for Spoons! Grand menu as usual.....love the character of the building.....just surprised to see kids at the bar and sitting so near!!

User

Beautiful setting and praise to Wetherspoon for keeping all the features, would love to see what the picture house used to look like when it was used to show films. unfortunately the rest rooms were considerably less impressive, but clean enough. The food was of usual WS standard and would recommend the second balcony eating area and the front two window seats, where the window shutters can be opened in warm weather.

User

We go to Wetherspoons in Colwyn Bay every second Sunday with my Dad and gave steaks. We understand that recently they have changed their steak supplier and have to say it was evident when we went last night the steaks were awful but worse than that when we mentioned it to the waiter he said well we’ve got a rubbish chef on tonight who we only tend to use when it’s quiet!!! Gobsmacked we were and very disappointed 😔

User

Typical Wetherspoons pub food was fine atmosphere was good could do with a spring clean in palaces

User

Only nipped in for a swift pint with the Mrs, daughter, son in law and grandkids. Looks a lovely place and has a lovely atmosphere. Shame about the foul mouthed taffy's we had to pass to find a table. Never a good thing for little ones to hear.

User

I liked the Picture House... The atmosphere was good. Staff Really nice and pleasant. It could do with a make over. The carpet is OLD/ WORN... Could do with Brightening UP. Then 8pm the air conditioning kicked in... We we freezing and moved 3 times... We left....

User

Good atmosphere great prices could do with more chips in a portion very poor

User

Ordered two lamb shanks for a birthday dinner.

The plates were cold and by the time we were half way through most of the remainder was barely warm. Not a great deal of gravy, which left the bed of potatoe mash dry and almost powdery in texture.

The lamb shank and vegetables were very tasty, but the meal was not really up to your usual standards.

I will still continue to come here but hope that attention to detail will result in fewer average reviews.

User

Looking authentic but very tired and aspects of the downstairs toilet corridors need a good clean however the food was as always good value for money

User

Ok for drinks but food is just warmed up rubbish, used to be so much better. Last few times me and the Mrs have dared to eat there the food had been either cold or tasteless. No point complaining to the staff either as they ain't bothered and take no responsibility for it. Sorry I never complain normally.

User

I was appalled with the food I received from this establishment. I ordered a Cottage Pie for £5.79 when it arrived I received a large plate with a small cottage pie probably a frozen version, and a handful of peas which barely covered half of the plate. It was accompanied with a small jug of gravy on the plate. Very poor value for money. And I'm sure trading standards would be interested in the picture of my plate of food served up. I do not recommend eating here.

User

I have been here since Monday and been drinking here since Monday night,Tuesday night and im on holiday and i had my 36 birthday yesterday but tonight i cant get served a drink yet back at home i can get served and the place at work you have to be 18. Plus got served a drink on the app and came to table but go to bar get refused!!!!

User

Would give a 0* if I could! Myself and 4 others come in this evening for a meal and also ordered 4 of their cocktail pitchers. They state on the menu that their mojito is new well clearly they need to work more on learning how to make one! The manger himself made it, it tastes and looked nothing like a mojito it tastes like a dissolvable paracetamol! Spoke to the manger himself who refused to changed it for another cocktail and refused to refund the £8 paid for it! Considering we spent so much on food and other cocktails would have thought they would of been more reasonable!

User

Ordered chicken wings, they arrived black. Shift manager himself served them to us and said sorry but the oil is old! They went back. Next lot arrived. They were stone cold inside. Clearly not cooked enough. They went back. Third lot came and they were just short of burnt but edible. Clearly oil needed changing and was just too hot! Very disappointed that they even served the black wings... And more disappointed they served uncooked food. How dangerous is that....

User

If I could give a zero I would. Ordered 3 meals. 1st was the wrong meal. Returned it to be told that was what we ordered. When we said no, we specifically asked for the buttermilk chicken and confirmed it twice, we were met with a grunt of.... Right...

The other two meals were cold. And I mean cold. The mash on top of the cottage pie was cold to touch, 3 of the gravy ramakins (2 ramakins per plate, not sure why it wasn't served in a boat) were cold and 1hot. Not realising the gravy was cold this had been poured over the pie already. So these meals were returned to the bar. I asked the server to put the back of his hand on the top of the cottage pie so he could understand just how cold it was. He agreed it was cold, picked up the plates and returned them to the kitchen saying they would be replaced. Again, no apology which a fellow customer also remarked upon too.

A short while later the meals were returned.

And I mean returned.

The cottage pie still had the indentation in the centre where my hand had pressed against it, the server's hand had pressed against it and no doubt the 'chef' ( I use the term in the loosest possible sense) had too. The suet pudding had been reheated and had the stains of the gravy that I had previously poured into it.

And what's more, while the mince beef of the cottage pie was hot, the mash topping was still cold!

I explained the issues immediately to the server to be told that the temp was standard as was the reheating. I said if that was the case, there food doesn't meet legal guidelines and I wanted a refund.

She picked up 1 plate and flounced off. As she was walking away I tried to explain that we'd be wanting a refund on all the meals, but she ignored me, so I picked up the other plates and followed her to the kitchen door whereupon I heard her say to the 'chef' "what's with the dickheads in here today"

To say I was fuming to be considered a dickhead for wanting warm food that servers hadn't been fingering was an understatement!

The manager did a very poor job of trying to appease the situation and had it not been for my wife bringing my child across I'd have found it very difficult to calm down.

Don't get me wrong, I understand wetherspoons food is not fine dining but it has to adhere to environmental health regulations on temperature control points. And for meals to be sent back after already being sent back once shows the kitchen staff's complete inability to take their customer's safety seriously.

I will never return to such a poorly run venue, and if you value yours and your families health, you won't either!
