Stayed here this week from Tuesday to Thursday...loved it, kitchen in bunkhouse very well equipped...stunning views, amazing food in the pub, fab quiz night on a Wednesday evening, ideal location to stay at to go and see everything or do everything you want...situated at the bottom of Blencathra. Only downside but NOT a negative would be to take your own fold up chairs for your room to sit in if you don't want to sit in communal kitchen all the time...bunks are quite low and not easy to sit on if you want to stay in your room for a bit...this will not stop us from coming again...but slightly uncomfortable if you have a bad back. Communal kitchen has two long tables and benches with seating right round (in the newer section), as previously said well equipped it has washer, dryer, tall fridge, pots, pans, oven, hob, plates, cutlery, bowls, microwave etc....lovely table/benches to sit at outside all along the bunkhouse to admire the view, available to hire quilts pillows and sheets (we took our own duvet covers and pillowcases)...lovely clean toilets and showers...fab that dogs are allowed as well...amazing prices when sharing and lovely staff in the pub which is 400yrs old and has a lovely atmosphere..look forward to coming again soon

User

Sat in the pub slowly digesting my starter of baked Camembert & my main of Lamb shank & mash with minted gravy! Lovely food & nice staff! Accommodation is spot on too, nice modern feel to the rooms & the kitchen area & showers/bathroom! Would love to stay here again

User

One of these places that we'll definitely be returning to, staff were very friendly, food was very good, atmosphere was brilliant and as for the bunkhouse...beds were comfy and the whole place's cleanliness was to a very good standard with a well equipped kitchen. Children and dog friendly place xx

User

My second stay here, just had the home made steak and ale pie... gorgeous. My partner had the homemade chicken curry also amazing. We also had the battered chicken fillets for starter which were lovely and juicy and the salad was nice and fresh. Definitely a repeat customer.

User

Lovely, welcoming dog friendly pub. Real log fire which our dog loved sleeping in front of. Very pleasant and helpful staff and lovely home cooked food. We shall definitely return.

User

Lovely pub. Blazing log fire, warm relaxing atmosphere. Food delicious and even made us some sausages for Spirit our dog. Lovely friendly staff. A great place to come after a day on the mountains.

User

Loved the welcome. We were soaked through. Traditional pub who did us tea, and we needed it after pouring rain and started snowing. Beautiful scenery just outside the door.

User

Had a roast beef dinner and was not disappointed, absolutely beautiful. Kids mac n cheese went down a treat with our 7 year old and 9 year old devoured the curry. Most definitely recommend trying this place.

User

Good food, good value, nice people

User

Food was top notch! Beef just melted in your mouth! Sticky toffee pudding and custard for desert was very very good as well

User

Food was excellent. Views from the terrace are stunning. Staff very friendly.

User

An excellent very clean bunkhouse. The services are excellent. The pub is warm and friendly and the food was great.

If I was to be critical, I’d say I was slightly disappointed I had to pay full rate for two of us in a room for four £48 when a few of the bunk rooms were free. We are a couple and didn’t want to share in the mixed dorm but considering there was just two of us and some space, they could have considered this.

Overall though, great bunkhouse and I’ll go back.

User

An excellent place indeed with a great choice of food and ales, had the Cumberland sausages meal which was delicious and the salmon dish my wife had was superb indeed, however the prices are quite high to be fair when you consider that 6 miles away is Keswick and the same meals you can purchase for half the price, don’t get me wrong the place and setting is lovely indeed and we will return if the prices were lower.

User

Very friendly staff. Lovely open fire to welcome you in. Food is delicious and very generous portions. The perfect end to the day if you've been walking. Only thing that lets it down is damp, cold toilet.

User

Super stop on the A66 and in a lovely place. Good selection of Real Ales and the menu looked good too, but we didn't eat there. They offer Wild Camping where you can park your Camper Van or Motorhome in the car park for free overnight, which I think is a great idea. Open all the way through from 10am to 11pm.

User

Fabulous pub, great place to arrive at, after several hours on the M6. Good food, the fire is always lit, dogs are welcome, the refurbed loos are amazing! We are always well looked after 😃!

User

Clean and comfy. We had a nice stay in the bunkhouse which is ideal for hiking Blencathra or cycling c2c. The ale in the pub was reasonably priced, which was a welcome suprise (a common problem in The Lakes is overly expensive beer). Children are allowed in the pub too, which is also great.

User

There were some serious issues with this accomodation. The heating was not on when we arrived so the rooms were cold on our arrival. The lighting was inadequate, especially since there were two flights of steep wooden steps which were extremely slippery owing to rain and fog. The kitchen was dirty and the mop was filthy. There was also a distinct lack of fire extinguishers given the whole place was wood and timber built. But it was the attitude of the management which was most worrying. When the problems were highlighted to them, they were unsympathetic and defensive; with poor customer service skills; and little comprehension of how dangerous these failings could become in the event of an emergency.
