Unicorn Grocery Description

Unicorn was established in 1996 by a small group of people committed to social change, who had a vision for the kind of place they wanted to shop in themselves. A place where a really wide range of wholesome, tasty food, sourced with care, would be sold at affordable prices. A shop owned and run by motivated worker-owners following a shared social and environmental agenda. A friendly, diverse and welcoming space that would act as a hub in the community.

Although we’ve grown a lot since then, those things remain true today. We’re proud to have proved that a worker-owned business with values can compete with national chains and provide a genuine alternative to the supermarket, and we’re now more or less the size of one.

Co-op members still aim to run the kind of shop they love shopping in. We hope you enjoy it too.

Interested in community housing, housing co-operatives etc? Greater Manchester Housing Action and Sheffield Uni are putting this on next month, it's in the city centre, looks good...

We've got to do some essential maintenance on our deli units tonight so the counter will be closing early, sorry everyone! Rest of the shop open as normal 'til 7pm.

I say 🍅, you say 🍅, we say 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅! August Veg of the month! Let's call the whole thing on!

On the shelves this week... Hodmedod have brought us another first, chia seeds grown in Essex! It was reckoned that the plant couldn't grow to maturity in the UK (it was a staple in Aztec Central & South America), but Hodmedod partner farmers Andrew and Peter Fairs have selected a strain that has ripened and yielded well on their Essex farm. “We believe we have successfully harvested the first commercial crop of chia seed in the UK” said Peter Fairs. “The crop received no pesticides and both yield and quality far exceeded our expectations – and the bumblebees loved it too.” More in the guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/…/first-uk- grown-chia-seeds-to-…

Date for your diary if you're interested in a warmer, healthier and greener home. "Green Open Homes Greater Manchester" weekend of 29 - 30 September, brought to you by the Carbon Co-op

Hodmedod are proper farming pioneers and they've done it again - first UK-grown chia seeds now on sale and yep, you can get them here from today! The tiny, dark, oil-rich seeds can be sprinkled on cereals and in salads, incorporated into bread doughs or used to thicken smoothies, soups or stews.

Anyone in Lancaster... there's a job going at Single Step wholefoods co-operative... pass it on! Closing date 13th August.

User

New pricing system's a-coming to the deli as of next week, here's why... Ask us if anything's not clear!

User

Just another reminder that, starting next week, we're changing the way we price stuff at the deli counter to try and further increase pot re-use. Read on for details or watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06bsrpj for some inspiration!
For the past six years we’ve been giving a discount at the deli each time you bring your own pot, this has generated a decent re-use rate, currently equating to about 20% of total salad and olive sales. Good effort everyone!!!
To try and inc...rease this even further, we’re changing the way we price our salads, dips and olives. From the second week of August, the cost of the tub will no longer be included in the sale price. The price per weight will be reduced a bit, and instead you’ll pay 17p on top of that for each new tub you need. You can avoid this by bringing in your own containers…ours or any other kind, as long as they are fit for purpose, clean and dry.
In reality, it's not really changing the price you'll pay, but we hope it'll help change the way we all think.

Well worth the drive from Blackpool to stock up the pantry. Very reasonably priced and the range of products is second to none. I'll be back next month for another trolley full. Car parking is limited, we park just down the road in the pay and display car park (only £1 for 2 hours on a Saturday)

I was very happy to shop here. Goodbye plastic wrapping every single vegetables, hello local and organic products. And it’s not even expensive ! I was sad though as I thought I could find other loose products such as lentils, pastas, rice, ... Is it forbidden to sell loose products such as these in the UK ? We have a lot of groceries that can do that in France (Day by Day, Biocoop, even big supermarkets), I guess it is easier to tend towards a zero-waste life there...

User

Or by the time I've been around the rest of the fabulously stocked store its starting to melt.. Got to work on my will power
