Remember, remember your pets this November!
Fireworks can be scary for your pets and they may start showing signs of distress, such as: - Panting, drooling and excessive barking in dogs - Subtle signs: ears pricked forward or back, acting withdrawn, or trying to hide... - Loss of appetite

As we head to that time of year again when Fireworks are used to celebrate various occasions, we need to start preparing our pets.
If you have a dog that is scared of fireworks then you need to start preparing a den (safe place). Doing this now before the noises start means they will not associate it with something scary.
... You can use a crate, put their bed, comfy blankets and toys in. Then cover it with a heavy blanket to make it dark and dull out a bit more sound.
Remember to walk them before dark.
Make sure all your contact details are correct on collar tags and microchip.
Is the garden secure?
Have the TV or radio on to try dull out some of the noise.
Do not fuss over them as this only encourages the being scared behaviour.
Thundershirts also have a good calming effect (in Pets at Home catalogue this month they have a money off voucher in there , if you are thinking about one for your dog).
Make sure rabbits and guinea pigs are covered up.
Keep cats in the house if you know fireworks will be going off.
The Dogs Trust also have some great advice on their website and have FREE downloadable fireworks sounds to start customising your pets too.

We are sure some of you may already know but the traffic through Dunstable is very congested today due to the M1 road works. Please try and allow enough time for your journey if you have an appointment this afternoon. Thank you.

***********Jabba's BOAS Story************ Jabba came to one of our Veterinary Nurses at a young age. He was just like every other puppy, happy, playful, chewing everything, doing all the things puppies should and shouldn't do.
As Jabba began to grow into a young dog he began to snore, breathing noises got louder and more signs of BOAS started to show.... Jabba was born in the cooler months of the year so he didn't show any issues with heat intolerance but as time went on and his exercise increased he began to take a lot longer to recover than what a dog should normally take. As summer came Jabba found it even harder to cope, exercise was kept to a minimum and cooling jackets were used to try and minimise any further breathing traumas.
You could now physically see that his nostrils were looking more closed than they had as a puppy.
In May this year Jabba was examined at a Veterinary Specialist Hospital and from his examination results there, he was booked in for diagnostic imaging and surgical treatment.
So the day came for our most important team member (Jabba) to go for his surgery. Once they had him under the anaesthetic they were then able to fully examine his airways. Examination showed that his soft plate was mildly elongated and his nostrils were crowded which was obscuring the airways.
Surgery was then performed. His soft palate was trimmed and nostrils were opened using resection and amputation of the nasal cartilage.
Post operatively he is now breathing so much better, snoring is minimal (hey we all snore from time to time) and he is recovering a lot quicker after exercise. It's still early days but he is progressing in the right direction.

***Do you own or are you planning to own a Brachycephalic breed dog? (French Bulldog, British Bulldog, Pug, Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Japanese Chin, Boxer and Boston terrier are a few examples)
***Are you aware that these breeds suffer from a syndrome called 'Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome - BOAS'.
... Symptoms of BOAS include:
*Heat Intolerance
*Sleep Apnoea
*Loud breathing noises
*Open mouth breathing
*Acid reflux
*Reverse sneezing
Many people do not realise that these traits are not a normal way of living and can make life very uncomfortable and/or stressful for the animal.
However, there is something that can be done to help them live a better life. At specialist vet hospitals, non invasive tests can be performed to grade how affected your dog is by this syndrome, along with corrective surgeries on their airways.
One of our Veterinary Nurses dogs 'Jabba' has recently been tested and had surgery to help with his BOAS.
(Jabba's story to follow).
If you would like to know further information please contact us and we will be happy to further assist you.

We lost our beloved boy, William, on Sunday the 15th March. He was sadly hit by a car and left. Thankfully some wonderful people of the community, found him and even though he had passed away, they took him to vets 4 pets to be scanned. I was lucky enough to find this out and be reunited with my boy so we could bring him home to bury him. Thankyou to the staff that day, for being so wonderful and understanding. Also a massive Thankyou to the ladies who found william and the care you showed xxxx

The kindest that Dominic & all the other staff showed our dog during his recent illness was absolutely second to none!we & he appreciate it more than words can explain!thank you all!

Dominic and his team have all went above and beyond to help our Pip. They worked tirelessly and made him so comfortable. Pip is now in Davies specialist vets on their referral, it is still touch and go but we cannot thank all of them enough. They all care about their patients and that is such a special trait. All heroes in my eyes.

Never again. My last few experiences have been poor. One vet was nervous about even picking up my rats. When I bought them to you a couple of weeks ago, about my rats having a URI, I was told there's not much could be done.

I took my boys to another vets today. When they requested the medical history of my rats, from you, they were told I had never been to see you...Despite me seeing you three times previously.

Instead of saying there's nothing they could do, I've now been given different medication. I'd rather travel further to get my boys seen at a decent vet, than use vets 4 pets agin. Your website says exotic pets are welcome. False advertising, surely, given you don't have experience in treating exotic animals..

Had a kitten in for castration and when we picked him up at the end of the day his cat box was fill up with urine like he had not been let out of his carrier. When we phoned to complain they simply said he was taken to the litter box before his operation but stayed nothing about after he was out of his operation by 14:15 and we collected him at 17:00 so nearly 3 hours with no way of going to the toilet. I actually am wondering if anyone actually checked on him properly?? Oh and the reply they gave was that he was difficult to handle and quite aggressive however he is very tame and even when we have guests around he has never gone for them he is very shy and timid and even my sister's kitten is tame and they said the same about that kitten.

Do they actually know anything about our small family members as they are not a pet they are family to us

Ok firstly he is around people he doesn't know and if a vet can't handle a 8 month old kitten then I think they may need to look at their career choices, safe to say we will find somewhere else to look after our kitten. What makes things worse is the pet carrier is a fabric one and is now stained so now got to buy a new one. Thank you so much vets4pets in Dunstable

Do not bring your animals here unless you want to leave traumatised! Absolutely disgusted after hearing how my cat was put down by them.... not fast, and in my opinion not humane! Would never go near them again!

User

Awful experience here. All 'vets4pets' care about is money. We will not be taking any future pets to this shocking surgery.
