Massively proud of all of our clients and the rest of the customers at Pets at home Northwich who raised a whopping £4378.31 in the run up to Christmas for the local Northwich charity Tails Animal Rescue! Here is the photos of our amazing colleagues in the store handing over the cheque this week, raised through Pets At Home's charity Support Adoption For Pets selling pet Christmas dinners and other fundraising 😊❤️

⭐️Brave Pet of the Month⭐️
Misty came in to see us after her owner feared that her eyesight had suddenly deteriorated because she was bumping into things. Vet Ruth examined Misty and found that both of her pupils were barely reacting to light at all – the pupils should constrict to small dots when light is shone into them, but Misty’s remained wide. Looking into the back of the eye, Ruth could see that not only did the pupil remain dilated, but the blood vessels that supply t...he retina were also enlarged, some of which had bled slightly into the back of the eye. We had Misty in to stay for the day so we could explore the cause of this sudden blindness. As an accredited Cat Friendly Practice, we aim to provide all of our feline patients with the gentle, calm handling they deserve. Misty was understandably anxious about being in a strange place with unfamiliar people. We gave her a small dose of sedative to make sure she was comfortable and took a blood sample. Using our in-house machines we analyzed the blood and found that her kidney values were raised. 20-60% of cats with kidney disease go on to develop raised blood pressure, or hypertension, in part because help to control blood pressure. Unfortunately raised blood pressure then damages the kidneys further, and also other organs such as the eyes.
This finding lead us to diagnose Misty with Stage 2 Renal Disease and raised blood pressure. This has affected the delicate blood vessels in Misty’s eyes, causing her to become almost blind. Hypertension is usually detected around 14 years of age – so Misty is just right at 15 years – but signs can be picked up from as young as 7-9 years of age so measuring blood pressure is a useful tool at regular check-ups. Thankfully there is a lot we can do to help her and her blindness is not always permanent. She is now on a special prescription renal diet which helps to maintain her kidney function and stop toxins from building in her bloodstream. She takes Amlodipine daily to help keep her blood pressure at a normal level.
Misty visits us regularly to monitor her progress and make sure she is continuing to be happy at home. One of the least invasive monitoring tools is to check the pressure in her eyes which mirrors the blood pressure. This is done with humans by puffing a small jet of air onto your eyeball, but for pets we use a Tonopen (see below) which gently vibrates against the eye and is very well tolerated by pets. This takes a number of readings of the pressure of the surface of the eye and creates an average. Pets of all sizes sit well for this quick test.
We are pleased to report that Misty is very happy at home again, her eyes are now both responding to light and visual stimuli which is great! She is taking her medication well and her eyes are steadily improvement.
If you notice a change in your pet’s eyes, vision or behaviour, call us to arrange a check up.

❗️Taking your pets abroad – Brexit Update❗️
As I write this, the UK is leaving the EU. This may have implications for pet travel, but not until 1st February 2021. From 1st Feb 2020 to the end of the year, the UK will be negotiating the terms of leaving. Therefore, cats, dogs, and ferrets will be able to travel to the EU using their current Pet Passports until then.
We still don’t know whether we will be a listed or unlisted country after 1st February 2021, so if you are pl...anning on travelling soon after that date, the APHA’s advice is to speak to your Official Veterinarian (OV) at least 4 months prior to your planned travel date. This is because if we become unlisted, your pet will need a rabies blood titre test at least 1 month after a rabies vaccination, and 3 months before they can travel.
You may also need an Export Health Certificate, and this can only be issued by an OV within 10 days of travel. Dogs travelling to Finland, Malta or the Republic of Ireland may also need a tapeworm treatment before they travel. Full details can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/guidan…/pet-travel-t o-europe-after-brexit
If you wish to discuss your pet’s travel needs, please contact Emily at the practice.
