Pet bereavement is distressing at any time but for children it can be particularly painful, especially if this was a first pet, or there has been other losses.
We feel its extremely important to support children during this process and that honesty is the best policy.
The link below is a very good article from the Blue Cross explaining just what support can be given.
... Www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-loss-support-chi ldren-missing-my-fŌĆ”
There is also an excellent book written from a child's perspective and we have attached a photo of this.
We have also attached a letter written by our practice managers son following the loss of their beloved labrador Alfie last year. The loss is like that of a family member as he was very much a huge member of the family so it's always good to ensure teachers are made aware of any upset. The letter was written the day after Alfie had passed away and there were some tears at school and the teacher suggested writing a letter to Alfie.
Its important to recognise that there is support available and that we will help anybody with any concerns leading up to a difficult decision.

Although beautiful to look at, not all plants are safe to small furries. It is important that you are aware of plants that could be harmful to your grazing pets. For tips on keeping your pet safe this spring take a look at our dedicated page below.

Some of you may remember the post we shared recently about releasing a rehabilitated hedgehog.
A wonderful lady who helps look after the hedgehogs has done this for over 20 years and has rehabilitated hundreds probably even thousands and does this at her own cost with no help at all.
As its hedgehog awareness week we thought it would be lovely if we could arrange a collection for this caring lady. We have taken a couple of pictures of things that would be very helpful which ...can be bought from our Pets at home rawtenstall store and if any one wishes to donate these items they can be left at the practice.

Just like us, our pets can have a range of reactions to bee and wasp stings. At their worst, extreme immune reactions can cause serious swellings. If you see any reaction from your pet to an insect sting call the practice on 01706 833050.

Has everyone else got the 'Hinching' bug?!
It is important to be aware that strong acid or alkaline cleaners are a big risk to pets, so it is important to keep these out of reach. For more advice on keeping your pet safe this spring visit our dedicated page below.

Although beautiful, lilies are harmful to cats. (Even the pollen from lilies can be enough to send cats into critical illness.) If you think your cat has been exposed to lilies call us straight away on 01706 833050 .Visit our website to find out more about lily poisoning in cats.

Pet Allergy Awareness is between the months of May-July. An allergy is where a normally harmless substance (which for most animals poses no problem) is identified by the allergic animal as a 'threat', their immune system produces an inappropriate response, resulting in the symptoms we often see. Allergens can be inhaled, eaten or absorbed through the skin.
Symptoms of allergies include;
... Itchy irritated and spotty skin Hot sore and itchy ears Persistent licking, chewing and nibbling of paws Loose Motions and weight loss Coughing, wheezing, struggling to breathe.
During the next few months our allergy testing labarotory has put a special deduction on the costs and we are passing that on to any clients that wish for their pets to go through the allergy testing.
If you do have any concerns that your pet has allergies or wish to go ahead with testing then please call the surgery on 01706 833050 to arrange an appointment.

Salt the gerbil came to see vet Becky with a very sore eye, to enable Becky to get a better look she needed an anaesthetic. Small furries lose heat very quickly so to ensure she was kept warm we placed her in a baby sock and on a heat pad ¤ÆĢ Rossendale Responsible Animal Rescue -RRAR

The Month of May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month! We couldn't be more proud of our nurses Abigail, Lucy and Raegan. We often hear clients refer to nurses as 'just a nurse'. A nurse is an integral part of our team, they are very much more than just a nurse!
Nurses provide skilled supportive care for sick animals as well as undertaking minor surgery, monitoring anaesthesia, providing medical treatments and diagnostic tests under veterinary supervision. They nurse pets as i...f they were their own, they support clients in difficult circumstances, educate owners on wellbeing and preventative care and support the vets in their daily role.
Over the month we will show you pictures of the roles ours nurses do and just how important they are!

'It's not just a Colin the Caterpillar chocolate cake it's a toxic colin the Caterpillar chocolate cake!'
Pan thought he would join the birthday celebrations at home and eat a full birthday cake! Unfortunately Pan didn't realise he would be seeing it just as quickly as it went down!
Chocolate contains an ingredient called theobromine. Humans easily metabolise this but dogs process it much more slowly allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system. If left untreated ...chocolate poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, abnormal heart rate, seizures and can even be fatal!
Pan was given an injection to make him vomit up all the chocolate he had eaten, within 10 minutes Pan had brought back up all the cake along with the rest of the kitchen snacks he had pinched (we always get the joy of going through the sick to check what's in it!) We also found the remains of the 'B' and 'R' birthday candles!
Once Pan had finished vomiting and he was stable we then gave him some activated charcoal which helps to absorb any ingested toxins to lessen any adverse effects.
He was feeling very sorry for himself when he went home and hopefully it will put him off scavenging again! (but then again he is a labrador so ¤żĘŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ¤ż”ŌĆŹŌÖĆ’ĖÅ)
If your pet does ingest anything you think they shouldn't then you must seek advice immediately even if you think it may not cause an issue as something safe for us isn't always the case for our pets!
