Williamson Park Description

Located in the eastern part of Lancaster, Williamson Park is one of the countries finest examples of a Victorian /Edwardian Park. It is a protected Conservation Area and also identified as a Grade II listed parkland on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. Williamson Park provides the setting for the Ashton Memorial, a 'domed pile' regarded by Pevsner as "the grandest monument in England. " In addition to the Memorial which is a Grade I listed building, the park also contains seven other listed buildings and structures that enrich the character of its parkland landscape More than 500, 000 visitors are drawn to the park to enjoy its particular range of activities and attractions, which are managed by Lancaster City Council and in 2013 Williamson Park was accredited as ‘An Excellent Visitor Attraction’ by Visit England. Activities and attractions include: - The Ashton Memorial itself, where there are viewing platforms, exhibitions, art galleries and weddings hires throughout the year - Tropical Butterfly House - Free-flying bird enclosure and mini beast house - Taste Lancashire Award winning Pavilion café - Formal grounds that play host to several events during the summer months, including the nationally recognised outdoor theatres - Children’s play area to Williamson Park in Lancaster - 54 acres of beautiful parkland with enchanting woodland walks, play areas and breathtaking views to the Fylde Coast, Morecambe Bay and the Lake District.

At the centre of Williamson Park is The Ashton Memorial which was commissioned by Lord Ashton as a tribute to his late wife. It was designed by John Belcher and completed in 1909, the restored interior hosts exhibitions and concerts and can be hired for private functions, including wedding ceremonies.

The first floor outdoor viewing gallery provides superb views of the surrounding countryside and across Morecambe Bay.

Opposite the Ashton Memorial you will find our Butterfly House.

The Butterfly House is Lancaster’s tropical oasis where exotic butterflies flutter elegantly around their leafy surroundings. The former Palm House has recently been refurbished and resembles a tropical rain forest with flowers, trees, vines, foliage and colourful butterflies. Come along and walk amongst some of the world's most beautiful species, including brilliant swallowtails, and cleverly camouflaged Owl butterflies within a natural habitat. The pupae of new butterflies can be seen in a special display case and you may even see a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. In the stream that flows around the forest you may also spot a koi carp. Tickets can be purchased from the shop

The Butterfly House is a popular destination for school trips and guided talks are available demonstrating the life cycle of the beautiful creatures. Bookings can be made by telephoning 01524 33318.

The Merchant of Venice is a funny play that deals with serious issues - in particular the keeping of promises. Wealthy Antonio borrows money from Shylock, and both are so confident about his paying it back that they jokingly adopt a ridiculous agreement: that Antonio will give Shylock a pound of his flesh should he default. Then events conspire against him so that he cannot repay the loan. Meanwhile Bassanio risks everything in the hope of winning the hand of Portia in marria...ge. Admittedly he succeeds - but when she gives him a ring to keep, and he is compelled to give it away, what future for their domestic bliss?
Shakespeare’s great courtroom drama is by turns gripping, funny, romantic and thought-provoking. International award-winning Illyria promise a production to keep you on the edge of your seat!

Cancellation in the event of hurricane only, when performance will be rescheduled. Tickets are non-refundable.

We love welcoming dogs into Williamson Park all year round but we do have a simple code that we ask dog owners to adhere to in order to keep the park a clean and safe space for people, dogs and wildlife to enjoy.
