Yew Tree Farm is the home of Heritage Meats. We are a working hill farm in Coniston with a small farm shop selling home-produced Herdwick Hogget and Belted Galloway beef. Also luxury self-catering accommodation, wedding venue & The Herdwick Experience.
Yew Tree Farm Description
Yew Tree Farm is home to Heritage Meats where Herdwick sheep and Belted Galloway cattle are reared by traditional methods to produce award winning Belted Galloway beef and Herdwick Hogget. My meat is now sold nationally. It's amazing flavour and quality is well recognised and is endorsed by some of the countries very top chefs.

I also have an on site butchery. So if you are in the area, you are welcome to call in to Yew Tree farm, as many of you do, where I will be more than happy to butcher anything from a single chop or joint to a full animal while you wait.
Yew Tree Farm was recognised by Beatrix Potter as having outstanding wildlife value. So much so that she bought Yew Tree and donated it to the National Trust to protect it. I farm today using the same traditional Methods used in Beatrix Potter's day. I'm proud to be custodian of some of the most precious and treasured habitat in the UK!

Ooh! Cozy!!
You may have noticed some scaffolding up on the barn if you’ve walked or driven past Yew Tree Farm recently ... and wondered what’s happening! Just to fill you in, the National Trust Building Conservation team are renovating parts of the famous Spinning Gallery, as it’s fallen into a dangerous state of disrepair. They have planned this work meticulously over the last year or so, to make the repairs as unobtrusive and authentic as possible. The fresh oak timbers will soon weather and silver to merge seamlessly with the existing structure, safeguarding this nationally important architectural feature for future generations 😊

Winter is definitely getting its feet under the table! These frosts are beautiful. They also mean the grass is no longer growing, and what grass is left has very little nutritional value.
The grass is pale and yellowing as it withdraws the proteins and nutrients down into it's roots for winter storage. It will go into survival mode over the winter, doing just enough to stay alive until the spring.
Now the animals are no longer able to gain any worthwhile nourishment from the... grass blades, we will start to feed them the sweet, protein rich summer grass, which is now preserved as hay and haylage.
So over the next few days and weeks you’ll notice racks and ring feeders popping up in various places around Tarn Hows and other parts of the farm. Often we place these in areas that are heavily invaded by bracken. The trampling of the animals helps to beat the bracken roots into submission! A much better method than using harsh chemical sprays.

... Our Belties have a long, natural and stress free life in the heart of the beautiful Lake District World Heritage Site. No markets, dealers yards or long journeys in cramped lorries. Are cows are born on the farm and live here their whole lives, maturing at their own speed (roughly 3yrs).
Not only does this give them a superior quality of life, it also means there’s time for their meat to develop a rich and distinctive flavour and texture.
