96 year old Signaller John Jeffries jumped at Arnhem during WWII. Last year he jumped again to honour his mates who didn’t return to Blighty, and today he paraded and laid a wreath in their memory. A true hero...

What a cracking day for us to be hosting the Parachute Regt.Assoc. Airborne Forces Day North today. First through the gates this morning were the military charity Pilgrim Bandits with one of their Patrons, Ben Parkinson

A fantastic day and gathering for our annual Airborne reunion and remembrance service.

Making sure there's no waste in the Eden Camp 'Dig for Victory' garden. We've got courgette, peas, beans and rhubarb available today.

Tomorrow (Saturday 14th July) is the perfect day for a visit to Eden Camp because as well as being able to offer a great value family day out, we are holding the annual Airborne Forces Reunion & Service. http://www.edencamp.co.uk/airborne-forces -north/

Well it's not coming home just yet but what a performance from the Men's England Team.
Safety in the game has changed quite a bit over the years as illustrated by the famous Prisoner of War footballer, Bernhard Carl "Bert" Trautmann OBE, who had been a German Paratrooper during WW2. Captured by the British in 1945, he was held as a prisoner in Lancashire until 1948. When released, he chose to stay in Britain and began playing in goal for St Helens Town.
In October 1949, he s...igned for Manchester City, and is best known for his performance in the 1956 FA Cup final when, 17 minutes before the end of the game he suffered a serious injury whilst diving at the feet of Birmingham City’s Peter Murphy. Refusing to be substituted, he played on (in obvious pain as you can see in the video below) and helped City win the Cup. Three days later he had an x-ray on his neck which revealed that it was broken.
In 2004, he was appointed an honorary OBE by the Queen for promoting Anglo-German understanding through football.

This Saturday (14th July) we are once again proud to host the Airborne Forces Reunion & Service. Here's a few shots from previous years of what we're sure will be a great day. http://www.edencamp.co.uk/airborne-forces -north/

The theme is definitely green when it comes the Eden Camp 'Dig for Victory' garden. The potatoes, beans, peas, marrow and courgette are all coming along nicely. J.

An interesting article about one of the more unusual items on display in the museum. https://www.thescarboroughnews.co.uk/…/ simulator-was-a-key-…

User

Well Italy may not have made it into the World Cup this year but they had no problems in raising a team made up of prisoners of war back in 1945. We're all rooting for England today but if it's a day away from the football that you're looking for, a visit to Eden Camp would be a fine choice 😉

No too long to go until our annual Airborne Forces (North) Reunion & Service, on Saturday 14th July 2018. http://www.edencamp.co.uk/airborne-forces -north/

Brilliant first cut of todays filming. Thanks Will & Louis.

It seems that there is a big football game taking place this evening, but did you know that the game of football was as popular during WWII as it is now?
In both Allied and Axis Prisoner of War camps, sport in general was a popular past time to while away long boring hours of captivity, and football was one of the most popular team games.
In Occupied Europe, German military authorities used photos of British and Allied POWs enjoying themselves playing sport for propaganda pur...poses. They hoped that such photos would be seen by Allied soldiers who may be persuaded that to surrender and become a POW might not be a bad thing.
In Stalg XXI D, where these photos were taken, prisoners organised a tri-home nations tournament with teams from England, Scotland and Wales.
We shall be posting more football related material from our extensive POW archives as the World Cup enters its final stages.

What an amazing place. The attention to detail is fantastic....even the smell of different areas, to suit the setting. My boys really enjoyed themselves especially our 3 year old who wants to be a soldier....he keeps calling it soldier town. It was very much worth the drive and we will be coming again. Even the gift shop doesn't take your eyes out with sensible prices. Their is something for everyone's budget...even if it's a 30p tank.

User

What a great place to visit. Never been a into history of the wars but it is a real eye opener. The canteen is superb, i thought the staffs uniforms was really well thought of. Just remember you will need most of the day to walk round and take it in.

User

Went today. Absolutely loved it! Great for all ages. It's not changed much in the years in terms of some of the exhibitions but that's part of the appeal. I went when I was younger and always enjoyed it now I have taken my little one and enjoyed it just as much. The treasure trail was fun. I'm not sure if you do this but Would be good if you change the huts where the clues are for when people return to keep the trail fun. Loved the u boat and blitz Hut. Didn't manage to get round it all but will return in the summer to do the rest and play on the play Park. Fab!

User

Visited for the first time today with our children (aged 13, 8 and 3 years). Very much expected at least one of them to be bored but each one found something they loved about the experience.. It was a very informative, fun and relaxed day out.

The facilities were clean and there were plenty of spots to sit to have a picnic. We will definitely be returning in the future.

User

Visited first time today, as my son recently went on a school trip and asked me to take him back , must say I thoroughly enjoyed it myself ,looking through the different eras sights sounds and smells so much to look at a great history lesson well recommended

User

This place is a hidden gem loved it from the moment I arrived you really get a feel for the place with the sounds and smells very clever but arrive early lots to read and see

User

Outstanding day at Eden Camp. Brought my grandmother, dog and partner. What a fabulous day- staff so helpful and friendly and was even given treats for the dog. Would definitely recommend for a family day out!

User

Me and my family went to Eden camp yesterday (Thursday 19th July). Fab place and loved all the little huts and to explore them!! T took us about 2hrs to get round it with a couple of stops like pictures and needing the bathroom that is a great time period for having 29 huts. Then the refurbished house. So pretty much 30! That is absolutely crazy and my favourite one was the church. Great place really recommend it.

User

Me & my wife came for our first ever visit today. We both thoroughly enjoyed our time and found it educational and interesting. The huts really brings to life what living conditions were like for the soldiers, prisoners or war and evacuees, not to mention all the people who stayed in their homes, waiting for the war to be over. My grandad fought in the World War, my dad fought in the Korean War and my wife's dad fought in World War 2 as well. Experiencing some of the conditions they fought in really makes you appreciate all that they went through, to allow us to have the lives we do today. I will be very happy to visit again and i most definitely be bringing my grandchildren with me too. I would like to thank you for allowing this to be available for us to experience.

User

I visited Eden Camp about 10yrs ago and visited it again on Saturday 2nd June. There seemed to be a lot more to see l found it so thought provoking it made me realise what our forces went through because of them we are here today and it made me so proud of them. Well done Eden Camp for doing what you have done .

User

I first visited the camp as a young man when i was 20yrs old, I found the place fascinating back then and it always stuck in my head to one day return.

Yesterday I brought my 2 children here some 23 yrs later and the place is even better than I remember, what strikes me about the place is the attention to detail, it's simply brilliant, I can't say anymore than that really you must pay the place a visit at some point as it really does bring home what conditions were like during the war years, more so than any other place you will ever visit.

User

I came here with my primary school about 25 years ago and absolutely loved it. Finally made it back with 2 of my kids today and I can honestly say I loved it just as much.

The staff were so friendly and helpful, every exhibit was well kept, the toilets and cafes were absolutely spotless and the grounds are so neat and tidy. It's a real little gem of a place.

Also the giftshop was really reasonably priced, not like other places who just rip you off, meaning the kids came away with lots of souvenirs.

Thanks for a great day and we look forward to coming again.

User

Had a great visit to Eden Camp with my family, we had a great 3hrs there wandering round. and stopping half way for refreshments. great place, very good effects in the rooms, smells that will have the olders ones guessing at them.

We had the dogs in tow also, which is great that they can be included.

Highly recommend it.

User

Had a great day out today my little one loves Eden camp and wev visited a few times now. We always enjoy it and my 5 year old loved looking in the huts for the eggs today. Was brilliant that there were war time ppl dressed up and walking around the camp gave it a great feel x

User

Great museum with so much to see, read and hear.. We could have spent a few more hours there just reading through everything. Will definitely recommend you to everyone I know. Also the cafe was great. Well priced with a good choice of food and drinks.

User

Great day out, although very cold you still got the full experience. I would avise if going on a cold day wear something warm. It was very clean and well looked after. Lots of information to read and the introduction of film caters to a more visual audience. It is also just as I remember it been as a child.

I never got the opertunity to try the cafe but others have said that it is nice and a resonbile price.

User

Fabulous place to visit for both adults and children. I’ve visited before as a teacher with my class but yesterday was with my sister, her two granddaughters (9&12) and my two grandsons (7&9). We all thoroughly enjoyed it - interestingly the children particularly enjoyed the Music hall! The only downside for us was the weather and the distance from where we live in the Lakes...

User

Amazing place this was our second visit and can’t wait for the third! Perfect for all the family no matter what ages our nieces who are 16 & 18 loved it just as much as us

User

Went many times in the past. Since decided to take my partner and two dogs today. As partner always wanted to go. Still just as brilliant as first time went. Only thing if eat or drink in cafe. Dogs are allowed in sat down and member of staff snapped at us to say dogs behind barrier. There was no signs to say so and him being rude spoilt it a bit. Will go again
