Jervaulx Abbey & Tearoom Description

In 1994 Ian and Carol Burdon, who own Jervaulx Abbey, opened Jervaulx Abbey Tearooms to be a visitors centre to the Abbey. Carol over the years built up a reputation with her Home Made Cakes and Scones, and over the years the Tearooms became its own idientity. Ian and Carol added a 5 van CL caravan site and a Luxury BnB. Both buisness soon took off! With the Tearooms still going strong their youngest daughter Anna, at 21, returned to take over the Tearooms from her mother in 2010.
Anna still continues on with the Home Made Cakes and Scones, over 100 varieties of cake and scones throughout the year. The Menu varies to try and suit as many people as possible. From Homemade Fishcake, Local Beavers Butchers Burgers, Ploughmans to lighter meals like our very popular Yorkshire Rarebit Crumpets, Homemade Cream Teas. Making as much in our kitchen as possible, even down to the beetroot relish, most of which you can buy to take home.
Our Cream Teas and Cakes are the perfect end to a long walk or just to relax in the afternoon.
We offer a gluten free menu, which includes cakes! (we just like to mention our kitchen is NOT gluten free, although everything we make for this menu we do all we can to keep it seperate)
2012 eldest daughter Gayle has returned to Tearooms bringing her buisness, Where The Ribbon Ends, bespoke sugar craft. We have a fabulous display of her work, these homemade cakes can literally be turned into a piece of art! from weddings, birthdays, christenings or anniversary Gayle can make a cake to suit you!

We visited Rievaulx Abbey last night and that got us in the mood for our amazing lights event too! Great to see what they have done, to see the archways alight. Next our turn 😁😁🎉🎉😁😁

User

A reminder.. We will not be doing our pre booked afternoon teas after this season. We close end of October, don’t miss out and grab any vouchers and get booked in before they are gone.

🎉Who’s joining us this year?🎉 We will be raising money for charity by lighting up the Abbey, we started this last year and with such a successful weekend we have decided we need two weekends! 5-9pm with the Tearooms open until late and food being served. More details on charities and other businesses involved will be released over coming months I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of seeing the Abbey in lights.... like nothing I’ve seen 🌈

User

We visited on Wednesday for my birthday treat , booking the spring afternoon tea. The service was exceptional from the moment we arrived. We were shown to our table and ordered drinks. The room was beautifully decorated and as the only people at 3pm it was like a private dining experience! The tea arrived , presentation was superb and the waitress explained what everything was on the menu. We savored every morsel and the staff were very attentive, bringing extra milk and hot water etc . The cheesecake and lamb burger were a firm favourite with us all , exquisite! By far the best afternoon tea we have ever experienced! Many thanks for a wonderful birthday !

User

We visited for afternoon tea for my birthday in July. The sandwich and quiche were lovely and the scones and cakes were amazing we sat outside in the sunshine, perfect visit. We will return.

User

We stopped here when on a circular walk in the area and had a nice coffee and a lovey almond slice. We were impressed with the quality of the whole place and the friendly staff. The cafe and the courtyard are very nice and the loos are very clean, tastefully decorated and provide good disabled and child friendly facilities. We would definitely recommend visiting here.

User

We had my grandparents 60th Anniversary here, having an afternoon tea. The food was fantastic, two savoury choices of baguettes or pulled pork baps. Lots of amazing cakes and of course scones. They were extremely polite, helpful and even offered their own congratulations to my grandparents with cupcakes and sparklers. Couldn't recommended them enough for anyone looking to hold a small event or even just a tea and a bite to eat after a walk around the Abbey.

User

We had a wonderful afternoon tea here this afternoon. Nothing was too much trouble, they adjusted the savoury choices to suit my husband and happily rearranged the table so that we could sit outside in the glorious sunshine. It was one of the best and most varied afternoon teas we've had, and we've had quite a few! Many thanks to the staff, we will be back.

User

We got married here on 1.7.2017. The Abbey itself is an atmospheric and wonderful place. It is wild in exactly the right way! It was an unforgettable day made so by the incredible surroundings and Yorkshire hospitality. We had afternoon tea in the chapter house which was beautiful and the food was amazing. In fact it turned into a race against time to get a sausage roll before they were all eaten! Anna, Ian, Carol and the team could not have done more to ensure that we had the day of our dreams - down to putting flowers from their own garden on the tables because we hadn't managed to organise anything. The photographs we have from the Abbey are jaw-droppingly gorgeous. A truly awesome place. Just sad we can't do it all again but we will definitely be back to visit and sample more cakes. Thank you all. Chris and Sarah Xx

Visited for the spring afternoon tea yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Shame the weather was so bad as we couldn’t enjoy a walk round the abbey. Staff were lovely. Look forward to returning!

User

This is such a lovely place to visit. The abbey is such a beautiful tranquil place. You could spend hours there just sitting in the peace and quiet. We visited yesterday and had booked afternoon tea in advance. It was lovely, so tasty, nice variety of cakes and savouries beautifully presented. Also reasonably priced. We had a thoroughly enjoyable visit yet again. Jervaulx is a must if you are in this area of Yorkshire.

User

There is always a pleasant welcome here and the home made cakes are exceptional. Well done the Burdon Family and staff

User

The best afternoon tea I've had. Surprised my boyfriend for his birthday. Not ur usual boring sandwiches. Nice nifty little pieces of food. Very different and original!! Huge as well had to take couple pieces of the cake home. All homemade. Amazing can't wait to go back!!!!

User

Popped in here one rainy afternoon after meaning to for a while. Well worth the visit, beautiful food, fantastic presentation and lovely staff. Will certainly be coming back and have recommended to all my friends!

User

Lunch at the tearoom was simply superb; the homemade burgers were delicious, and we were fortunate enough to secure the last jar of delicious, homemade tomato chutney from the shop. Combined with a visit to the peaceful abbey ruins, this was just a perfect day out. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

User

Lovely tearoom. Lots of fresh baked goods. Cakes are excellent and loads of choice. The lunch menu is also very good, but I usually just have cake and coffee. There is a local artist who contributes to most of the crafts on sale (Hannah Dale) and her pictures are gorgeous! She has also illustrated some of the children's books on sale as well. Of course there are a multitude of other gifts to choose from as well, I'm just mentioning a small area of what's available. The abbey is gorgeous and peaceful. It's great for families as you can eat picnics within the ruins on a nice day. Be sure to pay at the tearoom prior to going into the abbey though so that you don't have an issue with correct change. There is an honesty box within the abbey walls where you can pay if the tearoom is closed, but not everyone is honest!! Beautiful atmosphere and lovely scenery, well worth a visit!

User

Lovely place for a birthday treat, or just mother and daughter time!!! Looking forward to going again soon !!!! :-)
