Mother Shipton'S Cave Description

Mother Shipton’s is a beloved Knaresborough landmark and England’s oldest visitor attraction, open since 1630. This popular visitor attraction tells the story of Mother Shipton and the Petrifying Well.

Historic Woodland Walk
A picturesque mile-long walk along the River Nidd features the cave where famous Yorkshire prophetess Mother Shipton was born. It is situated next to the Petrifying Well, a unique geological phenomenon. Over hundreds of years curiosity has drawn millions of visitors to the well to see cascading water turn everyday objects to stone - as if by magic.

People around the world visit the park, a remnant of the Royal Forest of Knaresborough with some of the oldest, tallest beech trees in the country.

Who was Mother Shipton?
Mother Shipton was born in a cave in 1488 and grew up around Knaresborough. As she grew older, her prophecies became known throughout England. She foretold the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 and the Great Fire of London in 1666. She made her living telling the future and warning those who asked of what was to come.

Fun for all the Family
Great for all ages, there’s fun for families in the adventure playground, scenic picnic areas, interactive trails and actors during events, and petrified objects displayed in the museum and gift shop. Dogs are welcome in all areas, apart from the playground. Areas of the park have restricted access.

2020 Events
Families can Hoppity Hop to Mother Shipton’s for an egg-citing Easter adventure, be immersed in magic during May Half Term at Pixie Village, have an enchanting summer journey with Peter Pan and Tinkerbell, and enjoy a Spooktacular Halloween. The popular Christmas Experience will be returning! Details will be released on the website in due course.

The Summer Holidays are fast approaching, and we are busy finishing the props for the Robin Hood adventure! These events have grown over the last few years. Props are created in house and I am currently trying to think of rhymes for the trail quiz... a slow process followed by sudden light bulb moments. You will probably see me out and about with the camera during events, and I have spoken to families who enjoy visiting for every event throughout the year. It really makes our... day to hear that families are having an enjoyable visit.
The Mumbler awards are fast approaching, and we would love for you to nominate us, it would mean a lot to all the staff here at Mother Shipton's.
Please consider voting for us in the category: Mumblers' Favourite Children's Attraction

What a fabulous place. Me and my 2 year old had hours of fun. The Hansel and Gretel week is fantastic. Would recommend for all ages. A perfect family place to visit. Also a very safe place for kids to run around . Thankyou we will be returning.

We visited here yesterday with our 4 year old little boy and we had a fab time! My little boy loved having his own little map and trying to work out the clues, he was absolutely amazed by the "real life mermaid and pirate " the theme was right up his street and he loved every minute of it. The staff at the gate were amazing and so friendly, and all the characters were amazing with my little boy. My hubby also enjoyed it and enjoyed finding out all the history about the place. The setting is great, and the surrounding views are beautiful.

User

We loved being able to have our picnic below the viaduct before embarking on the fantastic Beatrix Potter Trail. The children loved meeting Jeremy Fisher and Peter Rabbit was incredibly cute!

It was incredibly interesting learning about Mother Shipton too! Very friendly staff and great adventure playground too! Thanks for warning us about the mud so my kids came prepared their wellies & over-trousers.

User

We have enjoyed each visit we've made during school holidays, always lots of fun for the kids, they love the challenges, staff are fab and the actors always so comical and entertaining, only thing missing is a nice little tea room (looks like there once was one but now closed?) Look forward to our next visit 😃

User

Visited here for the first time today! Two adults, a two year old and a 13 year old. Absolutely loved it!! I had messaged the attraction before the visit for general information and received a prompt reply. Very friendly. Visited today for the Easter hunt. It was fabulous!! The staff and characters were lovely. Made to feel very welcome. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours. We ventured into Knaresborough too, liked the fact we could leave the car after the Easter hunt to explore. Can highly recommend this attraction. Cannot wait to return in May half term for the next event. A huge thank you to all involved for making today so great!

I've been here when I was a little girl and I came back today with my 22 month old daughter. We loved it.

A great environment for a little explorer and the playground is a lovely addition.

We came on a beautiful day so could enjoy a picnic.

We timed our visit with the Hansel and Gretel theme and it was fab how the team really involved my little girl.

Thank you

User

I have been to mother shiptons a number of time since I was a child I took my 3 girls today we really enjoyed it, I was saddened by the fact guides don't show you round the well and tell the story anymore which was mich more interesting than listening to a pre recorded story I have to give it 5 star just because it's in a beautiful place and the well is also beautiful as for the priice it is abit steep why not make it a year pass like other places and maybe look at some sort of coffe shop xxx

Fabulous day out - good value for money. Easter egg hunt was fun and very interactive. My six year old son enjoyed making a wish. Would definitely recommend this day out.

User

Briefly vsited here this afternoon. Met at the gate by a charming and engaging gentleman attendant followed by an engaging walk through a very atmospheric and uplifting spiritual setting. Loved it but needed more time than the 1 1/2 hours I had.

User

Been twice and loved both times and will probably love the next time we go

User

A lovely walk, big play area and robin hood theme makes for some lively dramatic parts.

Suitable for all ages.

User

Lovely walk round but very disappointed with Mother Shiptons Cave, it's just an opening in the rock, very overpriced :/

User

Spent no more than half an hour walking round and cost £22 for two adults, one child (aged 12) and parking. Daylight robbery for such a small attraction. Will not be going again.
