Kayleigh Dibble sent in this lovely photo of her daughter Freya thoroughly enjoying herself at Rievaulx. She was joined by Mummy, Daddy, Nanny, Grandad and Masie the dog. There is something for the whole family to enjoy at the Abbey!

In 1802 Dorothy Worldsworth, the sister of one of England’s most well-known poets visited and gazed upon Rievaulx.
“I could have stayed in this solemn quiet spot till evening without a thought of moving but W. was waiting for me!’”
Now, 200 years later the very same ruins will be lit up with colourful lights, bound to inspire your own inner poet. ... Book your tickets for Illuminating Rievaulx https://eht.social/2xAthsE

There are some interesting carvings on the gravestones in the original Norman area of the church.

User

Taken earlier this month, the dominance of the Abbey must have been quite spectacular for miles around.

We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful finale to the staff ‘after the reformation ‘ tour by our very own ‘Brother Anthony’. A slight drizzle of rain and after- the most inspirational halo of rainbow above the Abbey.

Medieval abbey ruins, spectacular colours, the smell of toasting marshmallows and a Victorian poet! For three nights only come and explore the 12th century abbey in a truly different light. To plan your visit, book tickets and see our FAQs, please visit: https://eht.social/2MMc7gw

Unfortunately, due to high winds Rievaulx Abbey is closed for today. Why not stay indoors and play a board game just as they did at Rievaulx some 500 years ago? This game piece was found at the abbey and tell tales of leisure and windy days past. We apologize for any inconvenience, if you have any queries please feel free to contact our site staff.

John Plumb has managed to capture the soft greens and mellow blues by the church. Lovely photo, thanks John.

User

Wow! This place is so awesome. It's inspiring, emotional, evocative, beautiful and definitely one of a kind. I could have spent hours and hours here. It is definitely a place for personal contemplation... I loved it and will be back soon....

User

What a magnificent site and sight. The clouds were very black which added to the atmosphere. One can't imagine what it must have looked like when it was first built, the skill and ingenuity is breathtaking. We loved our visit and to top it all I want able to buy some plants which I haven't been able to get down South. A memorable end to our short stay in North Yorkshire.

We visited on our way home from Robin Hoods Bay. It was really foggy which made it really atmospheric and quite eery. The cafe, shop and reception are in a lovely new building overlooking the abbey. Audio guide is really informative and interest as are the plaques around the site. The museum is really interesting too.

For information.. The car park is £4 but you get your money back upon paying entrance fee.

User

We love this Abbey! Staff are lovely, cakes amazing! There is a brilliant little exhibition space with interesting artefacts. Nice balance between accessible yet still informative. Top place to go whatever the season.

User

We had a wonderful time visiting Rievaulx and was lucky with the weather in February! It is fantastic for all ages as my children loved exploring the place and finding hidden gems around the abbey ... picturesque scenery and a great place for taking pictures! Would go back again as well worth it but I would avoid driving through the Sutton Bank route as my heart was in my throat! The staff were brilliant and helpful too.. thankyou for making it memorable for us all.

User

This is such a great place to visit! Small enough to see everything; the area/valley is gorgeous at any time of the year. Great new tea house and facilities! Great staff, always helpful and cheerful. Sampled some lovely liqueurs.... ginger one is home with us to share with friends!

User

Rievaulx Abbey is the most beautiful and peaceful place I've ever been. I highly recommend a visit if you are ever in the area.

User

Fantastic staff very knowledgeable and welcoming. Really picturesque, beautiful place to visit

User

Driving down a country road thinking I must've taken a wrong turn ,then Rievaulx Abbey sits I the distance. Such a beautiful sight.

The museum really gives you an insight of how the monks lived and how the Abbey must've looked before the Great Suppression.

So much to see and do all in all a beautiful day out.

One more point. The cafe served up good honest food and raises money to keep the Abbey looking it's best.

User

Despite the weather being cold & wet we had a lovely visit to The Abbey today. We started off by warming up with a nice cappuccino in the cafe with a lovely view of the Abbey, followed by a Falconry display by a couple dressed up in medieval clothes who were funny & entertaining, treating the 4 beautiful birds they displayed with great respect. We were taken by all the birds particularly the golden eagle, an elderly bird of maybe 19 years old who had a very majestic demeanour. After the display we walked around the Abbey Ruins where we were presented with some beautiful architecture and a very serene atmosphere. We also visited the museum which told us the history of the Abbey & where we discovered some interesting artefacts. All in all a good visit with nice friendly staff.

User

Brilliant place. Loads of nooks and crannies for kids to explore. Been loads and it's still fascinating. Beautiful place and surroundings. Plus the drive down to it off the A170 is stunning too. Probably one of top 5 places in Britain, if not wider!!!

User

Absolutely beautiful place with incredible history. Also had an incredible paranormal experience with someone speaking Latin in my ear for a good twenty seconds or more. Also saw a very rare butterfly. Thought we would be here an hour and actually stayed the entire afternoon. Try the Yorkshire Rarebit as well.

User

A wonderful, calm, magic place, I would return there again and again. No words can describe how amazing it is.

User

A fantastic place for the kids to explore and stunning setting for a picnic. Loved our visit yesterday. Even managed to get the kids to listen to the history of the place by an amusing man dressed as a monk!! Excellent place, shall be returning soon !

User

Abbey is absolutely beautiful and the lights were a nice touch. Couldn't get to the "smoke exhibit" due to the sheer volume of people (can't be helped, so not really a criticism). Overall I really enjoyed my visit.

Only thing that let the experience down was the cost in the cafe for what you got (and similarly with the BBQ).

Staff were lovely and really friendly.

User

A lovely walk from the beautiful market town of Helmsley. The new cafe and gift shop are farntastic if not a little pricey, but the abbey itself is wonderful and the pristine grounds are a credit to the trust

User

Sadly, never got to the Abbey after encountering some very cross local people shouting at us for trying to get down the road to park... instead ended up reversing all the way up the hill with a crazy resident cursing me! Something needs doing about the parking (and bonkers residents) or you will end up with no visitors. Shame because what we did see of the Abbey looked amazing.
