Selby parkrun event number 81 – the wet one!
On Saturday 27th July 2019, 103 people ran, jogged and walked the Selby parkrun course and despite a strong headwind on the home stretch, 16 of you recorded new Personal Bests.
There were 16 first timers - including visitors from Dartford, Birmingham and Rothwell as well as local runners new to our parkrun family.
... We celebrated Mark Thompson’s 50th parkrun – Congratulations Mark!
And speaking of milestones, our 103rd runner completed the 5000th lap of the course today. In 2018, we did not achieve our 5000th lap until 27th October – a sign of the growth of our amazing parkrun.
Those of you who finished sub 30 minutes managed to escape the rain. Those thereafter enjoyed a shower which gradually turned into a downpour. With rain pouring from the sky and bouncing up from the ground, we all got wet, and wetter and wetter!
But the smiles just kept on coming, and the support for our parkrunners was unwavering.
Huge thanks to our volunteer crew including: Janice and Kev who checked the course, did the pre-event set up and gave the first timers briefing. Dave the marshall at the 2.5km point, Ian and Pav the timekeepers. Steve the funnel manager, Sam and Phil our barcode scanners, Harry and Marija on finish tokens and Viki our tailwalker.
Thanks to our volunteer pacers – Ian, Peter, Jen, Lee, Aaron, Wayne, and Mark.
First home was Daryl Hibberd (17:43), followed by Ian Robertson (19:31) and Danny Mann (19:45). First ladies were Ciara McEvoy (22.37), followed by Katy Parker (24.15) and Alana Reveley (25:44).
The first juniors were Theo Wood, Alana Reveley and Bethany Swift.
Many congratulations to you all!

Selby parkrun started on 16th December 2017. Since then 3,119 participants have completed 11,975 parkruns covering a total distance of 59,875 km, including 2,557 new Personal Bests. A total of 290 individuals have volunteered 1,233 times.

Just a quick post to say thanks to the 103 runners who turned out today in tough conditions and particularly to my amazing volunteer team who showed you were made of tough stuff. Results to follow later today when everything (including me) has dried out!!

We are all set for tomorrow morning’s parkrun.
Just a few things to note: Tinkerbella’s are on a well deserved holiday, so please do bring your own refreshments.
... If you are celebrating a milestone- let me know before the start and you will get a special mention.
We have pacing vests available- let me know in the morning if you would like to wear one to help someone get a PB.
And look out for our new waymarkers which are smartening up our course. Sneak preview below - huge thanks to Giles and Paul for erecting them this week.
See you in the morning.

We still require two timekeepers, and a funnel manager to avoid cancellation of Saturday’s event. Would be a shame as we have some lovely new marker posts on the course this week. Thank you 😊

And here we are...that special day of the week which means we are closer to the forthcoming parkrunday than the previous.
It is also the day when the duty RD takes a peep at the roster with trepidation...."Do I have enough hi-vis heroes?"
So, here is how it is....I NEED YOU!!! Yes you!! So, be a diamond and put your hand up for one of the following roles, and lets get Saturday's parkrun organised so that around 150+ people in and around Selby get the opportunity to get thei...r Saturday off to a great start; and those of you who volunteer benefit form that warm fuzzy feeling that you have done an enormously good deed.
The following vacancies are available:
Funnel Manager - you get to hold a clipboard, write important numbers down and look very important.
Timekeeper (1) - You enable everyone to get a time Timekeeper (2) - As above and important backup
Barcode scanner - You enable everyone's barcode number to be linked to their finish time so they get a personal time.
Halfway Marshall - you are a sight for sore eyes. Everyone loves to see you and looks forward to your cheer as they know they only have 2.5k left to go!
Token support - You help ensure people don't take their tokens home as souvenirs resulting in problems for future weeks.
Tailwalker - As an extra safety measure, we prefer to have two tail walkers to respond to any emergencies on route and ensure everyone completes the course. You also make sure that noone finishes last - as you will follow behind the last parkrunner.
Pacers - you get to wear a special coloured vest and help another runner get a PB. You also get to run - the very best of both worlds
So, keep this week's RD smiling and lend a hand .

Who cares what they do! We'll be running 5k around an old airfield in the pouring rain. When I say 'We' I mean you, I'll be stood watching with a lovely cake from our on-site catering 'Tinkerbellas'.
See you tomorrow, the first timers briefing is at 8:50am followed by the main safety briefing at 8:55am and then the run starts at 9am.
Let me know if there are any milestones, celebrations or tourists that need a shout out!

Recent results from studies undertaken by the ‘Kumranistan parkrun Research Analysis Team’ appear to show that those who volunteer for parkrun tend to achieve a parkrun PB the following week.
I know! I’m as amazed as you are but luckily I still have some volunteer roles available for this weekend so that you can conduct your own test and more than likely PB next week.

Selby parkrun #79: We often use the hashtags #parkrunfamily and #loveparkrun when posting on our Instagram account. Today showed the importance of the parkrun community, and how these hashtags are true, when a parkrunner was taken unwell just before the start of the run. Thank you parkrunners for your cooperation at the start, offers of help and for getting parkrun underway as quickly as possible. Huge thanks to Dr Susie Foster and to Kathryn Gallagher who stepped in as funne...l manager at the last minute.
Big shout out to Dave Queenan who celebrated his 50th parkrun with us this morning. 49 of his 50 parkruns have been at Selby parkrun. This week 146 people ran, jogged and walked the course, of whom 27 were first timers and recorded new Personal Bests. Representatives of 21 different clubs took part including tourists from Queensbury, Cleethorpes, Frickley (pictured), Rothwell and Pontefract.
The top men were Paul Lyons (17.48), Will Birkett (18.50) – also first junior and Mark Thompson (19.24). The top women were Emma Giles (21.23), Laura Hicks (21.54) and Hayley Newbound (21.58).
The event was made possible by 18 Hi-Vis heros: Ian MARTIN • Kathryn GALLAGHER • Susie FOSTER • Victoria DODDS • Peter FOX • Jen RICHMOND • Giles BENNETT • Katy PARKER • Aaron Liam STEVENS • Stephanie HISCOTT • Kevin MOSELEY • Laura COLLINS • Stephen PRATT • Gary BIRKETT • Janice WHITELEY • Elizabeth CLOSE • Mary CLOSE • Sue COOK

We're sure that many of you will have been concerned at the sight of the ambulance waiting at the finish line today.
Rest assured that the lady who was taken unwell just before the start of today's run is fine.
On the recommendation of our resident doctor, Susie, the ambulance was called as a precaution, and the lady has been thoroughly checked out and is being taken care of.
... Our huge thanks and hugs to Susie and all the other volunteers who helped.

It's parkrun eve and not long now before Selby parkrun #79. The weather is looking fair at the moment - although I have past form of cursing the weather. We will have Tinkerbellas on site to provide tasty cakes, refreshments and their famous overnight oats. I could do with a couple more hi-vis heroes - a half way marshal and finish tokens off anyone fancies helping out (and gaining a volunteer credit).
If there are any milestones, celebrations or tourists, please let me kno...w.
I look forward to tomorrow and DFYB!

Evening all. As you may know, with some funding from Tesco's Bags for Life project last year, we've commissioned some marker posts to be installed around the route so you can keep track of whereabouts you are.
The lovely guys from Lindley's very kindly dug out holes for the posts for us last week - our huge thanks to them, and a shameless plug in return.
So all we've got to do now is get the posts concreted into the holes. Whilst we're good (we reckon) at (a) laying on a fr...ee, timed, 5K run, and (b) eating cake, we're not so good when it comes to practical things like knowing how to mix cement and how to make sure the posts stand up straight whilst the cement sets so they're not wonky.
Is there anyone out there who is able to help? Whether that be to provide the relevant skills, buckets, water, muscles or, well, anything that can help us get the posts in place, please?
Shout below - you will have our eternal gratitude in return!
Giles
