St Wilfrid'S Catholic Church Ripon Description

St Wilfrid's first opened on April 23rd 1862 at the request of the Catholic community of Ripon at the time in 1850. Prior to this, Catholics had to journey to St Joseph's in Bishop Thornton to celebrate Mass.

Dedicated to St Wilfrid of Ripon, the Church was built in the Lombardo Early Decorated Style of architecture and was designed by Mr. Joseph Hansom. The parishioners were very proud of the church with its unusual style and commanding location. The tower surmounted the apsidal sanctuary, and was finished off with a small turret containing a single bell.

The elegant interior of the church contains many items of interest, including mosaics by Salviati of Venice, a High Altar of Caen Stone and an outstanding Reredos designed by Edward Pugin. The Reredos exhibits a number of figures representing kings, bishops, abbots and monks, and also illustrates St. Wilfrid preaching before two kings and St. Wilfrid on his deathbed receiving the Last Rites.

The Lady Chapel at the end of the North aisle contains two stained glass windows which were a gift of the Marquess of Ripon shortly after he became a Catholic. At the end of the South aisle, St. Joseph's Chapel is remarkable for its elegant design and elaborate carving, and a painting on mahogany represents the death of of St Joseph.

In 1888 a beautiful window, designed by Joseph Powell, was placed over the High Altar in memory of Canon Vavasour, who contributed much to the founding of the Parish and who had died in 1867. Canan Vavasour is depicted kneeling at the feet of St. Philip, his patron saint, who presents him to our Lord.

Today is Trinity Sunday - Fr Tim's homily reflected on the creative relationship of God in Three Persons united in one Love. He compared this with the game played by Aslan and the children in the Narnia story - the playful, intertwined relationship in the story reflects the Trinitarian relationship.

Mature lady seeks travelling companion.....Can you help? SVP are looking for drivers to help bring to Mass some of our community who otherwise would not be able to attend. A weekly commitment is not necessary - it is hoped that a pool of 3/4 drivers per parishioner would mean no more than a monthly commitment. However any help - even if it is quarterly would be gratefully received. Please contact Martin or Jackie on fenlonmw@yahoo.co.uk or ring 01765 605018

Pentecost Sunday - Happy Birthday to the Church! At Mass today the staff and pupils of St Wilfrid's Catholic Primary School, Ripon led us in our worship with singing readings, serving, welcoming, offertory and collectors. In addition they read prayers in all the different languages of the school English, Irish Gaelic, Polish Rumanian, Tamil - to name a few. The young people who had been confirmed earlier in the year received a gift - most gratifying was how many of them now take a regular part in the Mass, via reading, serving music, helping with the teas and coffees. Bacon, and vegetarian sausage butties were provided after Mass to end the celebration. #Pentecost Diocese of Leeds/Bishop of Leeds #StWilfridsCatholicPrimarySchool #Confirmation #FaithinAction

We pray for all those who took part in the D Day operations. For those who never came back, those who did but lived with what they witnessed. We give thanks for their service and hope, as they do, that their sacrifice was not in vain. We pray for peace and an end to war. Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them O Lord.
