As today is International Women's Day here are some images of women building the Furness Shipyard in Haverton Hill during the First World War. The shipyard was built on the banks of the Rivers Tees, opposite Middlesbrough for Furness, Withy & Co as an emergency yard to deal with increased requirements due to the First World War. As many local men were away fighting in the War, groups of women were involved with the construction of the shipyard. Unfortunately, we know very little about these women or the part they played, other than the images held in our collections. Costing £512,000 and using 8,000 tons of steel, the bridge was the first vertical-lift bridge in the country and the largest in the world.
