The Northern School Of Art - Interior, Architecture And Product Design - 3D

The second year students have all moved on......however, we have some very talented first year students entering the second year in September. As part of the new UAL Extended Diploma they have to complete a Final Minor Project at the end of the first year. This year we set a project - The Re-generation of the High Street and gave them a location in Middlesbrough - Linthorpe Road from Nevisports to the bus station as a potential pedestrianised area. Students could select a kiosk, street furniture or a sculptural light. All of the designs were based on either the theme of botany or knots. Some designs link closely to their themes and some are further developed!

Just finished these on Photoshop....you all did really well...well done again and good luck next year!!!!

Well, here we go, a little late as the shows end today!!! We have been extremely busy preparing for our external assessors visit which happened yesterday...so here are this years final student show pics! Can I say a huge thank you to all the second year students who have worked hard to achieve the results they needed to get into their chosen university...well done my gang!!!!

The Summer Show opens on the evening of the 12th June.....so here are a few 'teasers' for you to look at! All ex-students are welcome if you are in the area. This year all of the student designs are influenced by the current theme of 'Brexit'......you will see some interesting comparisons. Check the college website for show opening times. Neil and I will be in college on Saturday 15 June....please feel free to drop in on us!

This is the first opportunity I have had to upload these photos from my birthday over a week ago! Thought I would share them with you all!

Today...I have been working at the 'school' for 35 years! Teaching students both past and present. My son Stuart (an ex-student now working in recruitment) has just brought in a cake which I have shared with the students - on a first come first served basis as the cake wasn't big enough to feed all 44 students and three staff! Can I share an interesting fact with you all - between the three of us (me, Neil and Richard) we have an incredible 94 years of college experience!!!!! Record or what!!!

Well, there's one hour to go before we have our Christmas lunch at college. No students today and it's cake Friday, so we have all had an apple turnover...I look like it's snowed on my moustache and beard....I will keep the cream for afters! We can go home immediately after dinner...so, I am taking this opportunity to thank everyone for their support this year and to wish all you ex-3D'rs and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I get a real buzz when I find out how or what my ex-students are doing now. For example, Callum Smith, studied on the course from 2010-2012. I found out a few weeks ago that he is working at Mark Newson Ltd. What a job!!!! Callum is one of four designers working at his Westminster based studio in London for one of the worlds leading designers! http://marc-newson.com/ Callum is going to come and talk to the students on the course about his job role in the new year....can't wait!

The course team are looking for someone to join them on a part-time basis. The job is for 14 hours per week with an actual annual salary of £11,180 - £13,507 for a September - July contract. This could be extended depending on student enrolments for 2019-20. This would be great a great opportunity for someone who needs to 'top-up' a new freelance designer role or for someone who requires teaching experience. Well, that's it! Another year over. Just going to have my sarnies and then....I am off for a well-earned rest! Having said that, my granddaughter is going to keep me fairly busy!

I will be returning to the The Northern School of Art in August having worked at Cleveland College of Art for 34 years 6 mont...hs and 5 days - who's counting eh! I remember when it was Teesside College of Art as a student here!

So, I have managed to arrange some visits for the next academic year by some of our ex-students. These visits will form a series of lectures from which I hope our students will be inspired to follow a design career path. So far I have an Oscar winner (coming from Canada), a world record beating automotive designer, a product designer who has won female inventor of the year, a retail designer who was working for Ted Baker and is now at Estee Lauder and a recent product design graduate from the Glasgow School of Art.
If there any ex-students working in architecture, exhibition design, furniture design and interior design and you wouldn't mind giving us a few hours of your time to describe your job....please get in touch!

Take a closer look at the student work. 10 students are going on to study architecture at Northumbria, Lincoln, Nottingham-Trent and the Glasgow School of Art. 5 students are going on to study 3D Design (furniture and product) at Northumbria and CCAD. 1 is studying interior design at Northumbria. 2 are staying at CCAD to study on the Foundation course. 2 have applied for apprenticeships (one successfully) and 2 are seeking employment. We wish them all good luck!

I managed to get some photos of the final second year show that I would like to share with everyone. The end of the year has been a blur with assessments taking priority on the HND and the new UAL Extended Diploma. Another year is over and now, it's time for planning for next year. Enjoy the show!

To all second year students who have finished this year. The course team are incredibly busy so we have decided that students should come in on Friday 29 June between 9.30am and 4.00pm. We would appreciate that you come in and empty your shelf, pick up any equipment (tool box) and your work that you want to take away with you. You can 'bin' any models or unwanted work/materials etc.
If you have any library books or money owing this will need to be paid as it could affect app...lications to universities. Grades will not be issued unless you have a clean slate.
The grades will not be available for another 3 weeks. The external examiner is in college today and tomorrow and then it takes time to process 'the whole college' grades paperwork. I know it is frustrating but you will just have to wait! See you on Friday.
If you cannot make Friday I will try and save any work or equipment. If I do not know whose work it is, as you have a habit of leaving stuff everywhere I may be forced to bin it eventually.
Do not turn up after Friday without ringing one of us first as we cannot guarantee we will be able to help you. You are no longer a student so you will have to report to reception if you do not come in on Friday!
