The Yorkshire Yaks are a fundraising team from Wensleydale, North Yorkshire, who will be taking art in the Mongol Rally 2017, an event deemed to be ‘the greatest motoring adventures on the planet’. So what’s so great about it you ask? We will be taking two 15-year-old battered cars across 20-24 countries, travelling approx. 15, 000 miles to Mongolia, ALL completely unassisted – the odds for an easy ride definitely aren’t in our favour…
So why do this to ourselves, you ask?
Well, in 2015 our Yorkshire Yaks team leader, Adam Alderson almost died due to a rare form of cancer, Pseudomyxoma Peritonei (PMP). Adam is a 37-year old guy who only two years ago, was on palliative care, at home, waiting to die.
He’d previously undergone chemo, failed surgery and as the PMP had completely engulfed all his abdominal organs, he was in complete intestinal failure. As a last-ditch attempt in 2015 he took the brave decision to undergo a multi organ transplant, complete with radical tumour de-bulking – it sounds scary and that’s exactly what it was!
The surgery took 30 staff 17 hours, but it was a 100% success. This consisted of the removal of a 10kg tumour along with his stomach, large bowel, small bowel, gallbladder, pancreas, appendix, spleen, abdominal wall, and a large proportion of his liver. He was then transplanted with multiple abdominal organs.
Adam is currently the youngest person in the world to survive the surgery, and the world’s first complete success.
The Yorkshire Yaks are hoping to raise as much as possible, to be split equally between Macmillan Cancer Support and the Steve Prescott Foundation – both of which played a fundamental part in saving Adams life, to give something back!

Brendan Moran is the man who saved my life !!
In 2015 I begged this man to help me, following failed surgery and knock backs from around the world. Brendan is a trustee of the Pelican Cancer Foundation and continues to be a huge support in my life, the team at #amazingstoke Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital are the best in the world for Pseudomyxoma and many other cancers, without them I and many others would not be alive today.
