aaron kearney design realises ideas and develops them through various mediums including wood, metal, ceramics, and lighting.

What started out as an observation for Aaron during his degree in London has evolved into a full tableware range.

He realised that a lot of meals were being eaten without the use of a knife. He and his three flatmates were all chasing their last few bites around the standard circular plates.

Why couldn’t plates be designed with an integrated straight edge? This would not only be functional as it would act like a knife, but would be a different aesthetic, a talking point, a new way of thinking.

The observation lay dormant until 2011 when the resourceful, entrepreneurial air of South Africa finally urged him to pursue the idea further.

The original 25cm “pasta” dish was born and was shown at Design Indaba 2012. The plates sold out at the expo, but equally importantly customer feedback was that they wanted a full range of plates in various sizes. This would allow different sizes to be used in combination, as well as giving users a broader spectrum to choose from, depending on what was being served.

The range now consists of five plates, four serving boards, and a cappuccino cup & saucer.
