A joint initiative between Shankill based Argyle Business Centre and Belfast Metropolitan College has enabled a Shankill group to be the first in Northern Ireland to be qualified in a prestigious Tourism award. The ‘World Host’ programme provides intensive training allowing participants to gain key skills in Tourism and Customer Service, an opportunity that Ex Prisoners Interpretative Centre (EPIC) saw as offering a gateway to employment for some of their members. “The next f...ew years are going to be huge for tourism in Northern Ireland”, explained William Smith, Development Worker with EPIC. “With a number of centenaries, the Masters Golf Tournament and a number of other events, it is important that local individuals benefit from this increased tourist footfall.” He added, “EPIC has always worked to develop opportunities for ex prisoners to take their place in wider civic society. The World Host provides our members with a chance to play a vital role in the regeneration of Northern Ireland by providing them with the skills to deliver an exclusive insight into the journey of the last 40 years.” Dr. Mark Brotherston, Director of Enterprise Development at Argyle Business Centre, awarding the certificates to the EPIC group commented, “It is great to see that EPIC have taken the lead in recognising the importance of the World Host Award. This initiative is being promoted throughout the UK in 2012 due to the large number of world-class tourist events being help, including of course, the Olympics and the Queens Jubilee.” “The World Host award is recognised as a mark of quality. By being the first in Northern Ireland to receive World Host recognition, EPIC have set themselves as a leader in local tourism.”
