Corporate Identity, Design for Print.

In July 2010 Rodney, founder of Rodney Miller Associates, passed away after a brief battle with cancer. The company tried to continue but finally surcummed to the current economic climate in January 2012. This year we would have been celebrating 33 years in business and I would have been celebrating my 29th year with the organisation. Rodney was and remains an inspiration to me. I've now set up my own business – 'Arnie Gormley Graphics'. Below is a brief history of my career up to now.

I joined Rodney Miller Associates immediately after graduating from the College of Art, York Street, Belfast in 1983. When I started out it was all drawing boards and paste-up. Design and artwork was produced manually and products like Letraset and Rotring were the staple tools. Since then the industry and myself have moved on a pace and now, as a 'Senior' Designer, I don’t think I can take anymore computer /software updates.

I specialise in design for print. Over the years I have worked for a wide variety of clients within the educational, government and private sectors. I have a particular interest in book design and my work in this field includes ‘Rooms of Time’, ‘A Portrait of Percy French’, ‘Coca Cola – A Passion for the Product’ and ‘Mount Juliet – A History’ and more recently ‘Omagh Gardening Society – A Potted History’.

In the past few years I have been extensively involved with the Northern Regional College, which has campuses spread over the north east of the province. The contract required a wide range of design disciplines and required a lot of my organisational skills which you might question if you were to look at my desk and immediate work environment.

In my day-to-day work I can be a bit fussy when it comes to the finer points of layout and design. I take a lot of pride in the accuracy of my artwork. There is a well worn phrase ‘that less is more’ of which I am firm advocate. When it comes to content and layout I try to convince clients that they do not need to fill every square millimeter with text or just one more photograph.

Outside work I have a passion for cars, of course coming a firm second after my wife and daughters. My current stable consists of three, thats cars not children (only two of them plus a small angry dog! ). My Mini Cooper (old type mini, not BMW) is my firm favorite. Apart from being a design classic, some say like myself, it always puts a smile on my face. It is real motoring, without some of the unnecessary luxuries of more modern vehicles, such as suspension.
