BBQ 30TH JUNE 2019 After a number of years absence the club will again hold its end of year BBQ on Sunday 30th June. This event was traditionally held as a fundraiser for the rowers going to the National Championships in July. It would be fantastic if parents and rowers could support this event, and wish the crews and coaches well for the national regatta in two weeks time. The BBQ will run from 3pm at 7 Ballyhome Road (full directions will follow). Parking is tight at the location so it would be great if people could share lifts. Please let us know if you are coming as we need an idea of numbers for catering. By the way its byo bottle.

The club will hold its annual fun regatta on Sunday 16th June. We will post details about the event in the next few weeks, but it would be great to see a big crowd, so please keep the date free. This is an important fundraiser for Bann, and we are currently seeking sponsorship for our t-shirts. If anyone would like to enquire about this, please email Colin at cp.breen@ulster.ac.uk

This was a weekend of wins! Bann excelled itself with the Club competing at both Dublin Metropolitan Regatta on Blessington Lake and Belfast Sprints. A list of wins (extensive!) to follow! Notable though is the girls eight who won impressively, beating UCD senior 8 into second by 4 lengths! Stops for extra petrol was needed from Belfast due to the large haul of medals onboard!

Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Hourican, Lori and Ryan met as young teens at Bann and the rest is history!

Saturday 4th May proved to be a very busy day for everyone at Bann. Portadown Boat Club very inconveniently planned their Regatta to clash with the much anticipated wedding of Bann members Lori and Ryan! With captain and coaches attending the wedding, attendance at the Regatta was looking doubtful but we are grateful for the help from Martin, Vince, Robyn and Frances Mary to ensure that our younger rowers were able to fly the Bann flag. Conditions weren't ideal for rowing but we recorded wins in WJ14 1x, MJ14 2x and MJ16 4x. Well done to everyone who represented the club!

A very successful day was spent today at Derry Head of the River. The cold crisp weather made for good racing conditions with Bann overall winners in both races, Race 1 was the WJ18 8 and then the MJ18 8 in Race 2. It was encouraging to see wins across all age groups for both boys and girls. Special word of thanks to our hard working coaches. And to our parents who drove minibuses and helped out, very much appreciated. #ourclub

Good results from our crews at Erne Head of the River, WJ8 came 2nd just 10 seconds behind Enniskillen and 21 seconds ahead of St Michaels, Limerick who were 3rd. A very encouraging result! The MJ18 4+ won their class, beating CGS into 2nd by 1 minute 15 seconds. They also took the scalp of 2 MC1 crews! A good day’s racing for both crews! Many thanks to coaches.

And how could we forget Conor Mcgillan who also pb'd today.

Well done to all who competed at the Irish Indoor Championships in Limerick today. Personal bests were recorded by Aaron Christie, Alex Hutchinson and Meabh Flannaghan. Ellie Kate Hutchinson showed her potential by winning the junior 15 1000m event with an impressive time of 3min 38 secs.

Good days training by Bann senior squads today on Newry Canal. 45k completed, so some tired athletes tonight! Thanks to coaches Davy, Geoff and Seamus for your time today.

Our annual Boxing Day races welcomed back many members including Fiona Chestnutt and Joel Cassells, keen to win this prestigious event! Olympian Alan Campbell helped Coach Seamus Reynolds as start judge out in the safety launch. With conditions near idillic, a good mixture of internationals, Irish champions, veterans and relative beginners, both male and female, watched anxiously as the draw was made for crews. The 6 crews raced each other, with the distinctive Bann style evi...dent throughout! The final was contested between two boats containing great pedigree! The winners were Kate Leitch, Joel Cassells, Mark Kennedy and Geoff Bones, expertly coxed by Louis Blemmings, a fine blend of Irish champion, world champion, J15 and veteran (coach Bones showing them how it’s done!) This was great achievement for Mark Kennedy in his early rowing career considering Alan Campbell had already won an Olympic medal before he managed to win at the Boxing Day races! A great mornings entertainment for rowers and spectators alike and a nice way to work off the Christmas turkey. Many thanks to our president Billy Bones and captain Keith Leighton who made a presentation to the winning crew. Thanks also to William and Jennifer Campbell and Sharon Scott, always great club supporters, providing hot beverages and working tirelessly throughout. We, at Bann Rowing Club look forward to a competitive 2019 rowing season.
