Belleek Visitor Centre is in full tilt at the moment catering for all the people taking advantage of our Christmas Extravaganza over this weekend 23rd -25th November. Some of the hard working staff took a little time out to get their picture taken in front of the Pottery's Christmas tree. Here pictured are Amber, Michael, Patricia, Joanna, Conor, Martina & Niamh.

An account of a visit to Belleek Pottery in 1870
In 1870 William Frederick Wakeman published a tourist travel book called “Lough Erne, Enniskillen, Belleek, Ballyshannon, and Bundoran: With Routes from Dublin to Enniskillen and Bundoran by Rail or by Steamboat”
W. F. Wakeman was born in Dublin in 1822, an accomplished artist he worked for the Topographical Department, Ordinance Survey of Ireland, where he produced drawings of features around Ireland under the instruction of G...eorge Petrie. After the Topographical Department closed he taught at St Columba’s School in Navan, Co Meath. Later he moved to Enniskillen where he taught at the Model School there and who at the time of writing this book was teaching at Portora Royal School in Enniskillen as professor of Drawing. He published several other books and his drawings for the Topographical Department are held in The Royal Irish Academy in Dublin. In this book he describes a visit to Belleek Pottery where he describes it as a “large and commodious building upwards of 180 hands are daily employed in transforming the earths and spars &C which are the raw materials of China wares and which earths &C are abundantly found in the neighbourhood –into works of art which are pronounced by competent judges to be unsurpassed in beauty of design or in excellence of substance” Later he describes the manufacture as “Every species of ware from the coarsest to “High Art” is here manufactured from nearly, if not altogether, Irish materials. Of the 180 hands employed, all (as we were informed on the spot) but about twenty seven are natives of Erin” He goes on to give a list of prestigious customers who have bought from Belleek “Amongst its chief patrons may be enumerated her Majesty, the Queen, the Prince of Wales, Prince Teck, the Duke of Abercorn and the earls of Erne, Enniskillen, Arran, and Earl Spenser. He remarks on the success of the venture to date and how it exported worldwide. You can read the full account of his visit to Belleek Pottery and to other places between Dublin and Bundoran at Google books- see link below https://books.google.co.uk/books…
