About Benburb Priory

The Priory - so much going on at the priory we aim to use this page to keep all our friends /visitors aware of upcoming events and everyday work and life.

Benburb Priory Description

Since coming to Benburb the Servites have maintained an ‘open door’ policy to all of the community regardless of religion and the Priory-Centre is seen as a haven where people can come and feel welcome.

The Priory - Centre is open as a Pastoral, Retreat and Conference Centre with bedrooms, conference rooms, meeting rooms and catering facilities. It is located in an area of outstanding natural and scenic beauty and of great historical importance, and gateway to the Benburb Valley Park, Benburb Castle and Bawn.

The Priory and Centre attracts groups from every walk of life who come to meet and discuss the many complex issues which effect their lives. It is also used as a recreational facility for groups wishing to expand their skills in cultural activities or for those wishing to participate in courses in spiritual and human development. Some of the groups who come are inter-denominational and they spend their time here living, working, praying and recreating together.

For many the Priory and Centre provides them with that freedom of association so often denied them in their home or local environment. They soon learn that it is okay to enjoy the company of people who come from different backgrounds and leave having made new friends.

A great night was had by all at our recent celebration on the life and works of Poet Patrick Kavanagh, held in the Benburb Priory Library and Museum. Much appreciation to our two captivating speakers Una and Art Agnew. Special thanks to the Benburb Servite community, particularly the invaluable support received from Fr. Bernard, Fr. Gabriel and Fr. Raymond, and to staff and volunteers Sr. Méabh, Gerry, Anne, Martin, Joe, Siobhan, Erin, Séana and Teresa. A huge thank you to Marie Burns who volunteered to play the harp for us, and her beautiful rendition of Raglan Road! Oíche den chéad scoth a bhí ann ar fad!

For the second year running the Benburb Priory Library & Museum will host a night of celebration on the life & works of one of Ireland's most significant poets - Patrick Kavanagh. Kavanagh penned the lyrics to 'Raglan Road', recently voted Ireland's favourite folk song! Why not join us this Thursday evening in the Priory, at 7.30pm to listen to author Una Agnew and her brother Art dramatize some of Kavanagh's most illuminating works! Wine & Cheese served.
