Camphill Mourne Grange

About Camphill Mourne Grange

Camphill Mourne Grange was established in 1971, a home for adults with special needs who live and work together with co-workers and their families.

Camphill Mourne Grange Description

Camphill Community Mourne Grange was established in 1971, as the first adult community in Northern Ireland. It is now the home for more than 140 people, including adults with special needs who live and work together with co-workers and their families.

Lying in the foothills of the Mourne mountains in peaceful rural surroundings, Mourne Grange is a working village in which everyone participates and is interested and concerned with community life. Life in the various households is like that of a family, since co-workers and their children, young and old alike, live together without the restriction of shifts and rotas, or payment for work or time given.

The farm, gardens and orchards supply the Community with fresh produce, meat, vegetables and fruit, all without the use of chemicals and fertilisers and using bio-dynamic methods. The bakery provides fresh bread, biscuits and cakes, which can also be enjoyed in our coffee shop. The small village store makes a regular delivery of goods to each household and the laundry workshop provides a much appreciated service for the village.

The Christian festivals, along with the seasons, are important stages in the cycle of the year around which many aspects of life revolve. Thus daily work finds its place in a complete way of life and the creative possibilities of each person are enhanced.

By continuing to help the wildlife around us through winter we hope to have a spring filled with life at Mourne Grange. Here you can see us making "bird balls" and hanging feeders, small things make the biggest difference so get stuck in yourself and watch your garden or local park come alive!

Some residents worked to raise awareness of Mourne Grange among our local community at Kilkeel. By setting up an awareness stall in the local Asda they were able to talk about their lives and stories to a wide range of people over the course of the day!

There is a new resident at Mourne Grange, a red squirrel! This furry friend of ours is a welcome sight and we hope to do whatever we can to ensure these beautiful animals continue to flourish. Thanks to "Heart of the Down Reds" (Twitter @heartofthedownreds) for providing the Kilkeel community with a feeder to aid us in this task!

Important news from the chicken ๐Ÿ” field! We are so grateful to the Friends of Mourne Grange for supporting our farmers in expanding our chicken population, we can't wait till we start getting lovely fresh eggs ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿ”. The new house has been assembled by the dream team and the young chicks will be moving in shortly. Meanwhile the old Chickens are loving their retirement accommodation.
