I have been volunteering with Childline for four years. I first joined as a volunteer switchboard operator then moved on to train as a counsellor. As a retired teacher I wanted to work with children in a volunteering basis and Childline ticked all the boxes for me. Childline is always there to s...upport children when they need it, and as a firm believer that each of us has a responsibility to keep childhood free from harm and abuse, it was the right choice for me. I enjoy my colleagues, I love catching up with them before shift and after shift as we all help support one another, it’s a Childline family which I love going to every week. At the end of every shift during de-briefing when you get to reflect on your shift I realise that I probably have helped a young person in need and walking out the doors I get a feeling of pride and nothing can top this! The team I work with at Foyle are a group of the kindest, friendliest people you will ever meet and they always make me feel welcome. A gift I would give is to always remember that you are supported by the supervisor on shift, and to laugh when a child tells you a joke you've heard 100 times you may be the only person they have ever told.

''I have been volunteering with Childline for one and a half years. I have always had an interest in helping others so someone from school recommended it to me, but I never thought that I could do it until I tried, and I love it. I enjoy my colleagues, I love catching up with... them before shift and after shift as we all help support one another, it’s a Childline family which I love going to every week. I feel most proud when a child says thank you after your chat. It’s a feeling of accomplishment and knowing that you helped that child through a tough time in their life, there’s no feeling quite like it. Everything makes me come back. I love Childline more than I thought I could, I always feel welcome every time I press the buzzer and even after I have had an emotionally difficult contact someone is always there to help me, and I am always ready to help the next child. I love the excitement of it all and not knowing what the next contact will be''.

Trainees come from many different ages, backgrounds, experiences but share the same goal of making a difference for #everychildhood. Best wishes to everyone starting out on their volunteer journey.
