Looking for a fun way to entertain the family? Then bring them down to Colin Glen Forest Park for our Bat Nights! Learn to love these clever aerial acrobats and see how many species our bat detectors can pick up.
On Tues 14th & Wed 15th August, our forest park ranger will lead evening walks in the park on the hunt for our nocturnal flying friends. Bats are an important part of our forest ecosystem, but often go unnoticed because they come out at dusk. While keen-eyed chirop...terists (bat hunters) might be able to spot them unaided. Did you know that the saying ‘blind as a bat’ is totally unfounded as bats have very good eyesight? One pipistrelle bat can eat up to 3,500 insects in one night. Bats use a form of sonar to locate their food!
Come and try your hand at bat detecting and discover how the park comes to life after dark as these little acrobats flit and soar through the trees. Using bat detectors to help locate the bats in the fading light, participants will try and seek out the smallest species of bat found in Britain and Ireland – at less than two inches tall and only an eight-inch wingspan, these nocturnal creatures are best studied at dusk. So join us in the search for the elusive and protected Pipistrelle bat.
And there’s more! There will also be a short presentation about these unique mammals.
So, come join in the fun. Please wear appropriate shoes and clothing for an evening walk. We also advise participants to bring their own flashlight!
Dates: Tues 14th & Wed 15th August 2018
Admission: £4 per person

Join our experienced Park Ranger as he tells the geological history of Colin Glen and the Belfast Hills. Go on a fossil finding expedition in the park to search for the remains of ancient creatures – who knows what you might discover! Learn about our prehistoric past & you may just be lucky enough to take a piece of history home with you. Our fossil hunt will be a sell out event. DON’T MISS IT!
Home of Paleontology Did you know that Colin Glen was once NI’s equivalent to Jura...ssic Park? The Forest Park is rich in fossils and is a site of great geological interest. Indeed The fossil of a prehistoric sea monster that lived more than 144 million years ago was found in the Colin river by our Park Ranger – Paul Bennett. It would have belonged to a creature known as a ‘sea dragon’ about 20 metres long, which was here in the Jurassic period, during which, Ireland would have been down where the Sudan is & covered by seas.
Dr Michael Simms, a curator of paleontology at the Ulster Museum, examined the fossil and believed it to be 190 million years old. The 7 cm section of vertebrae belonged to The plesiosaur, which had a round short body, four flippers, a short tail, a very long neck & small head. They had sharp teeth and snapping jaws, which set a deadly trap for small aquatic animals.

Well I love the whole gruffalo story so this made for a great walk. I went with the grandkids and we had great fun following the arrows and clues to getting to the gruffalo and meeting the other animal statues on the way. It is suitable for everyone as it's not a long walk, a bit up hill but easy coming back down! There's a coffee shop, souvenir shop and activity centre also wall climbing, vertigo and laser ( although we didn't try these out this time) will definitely come back another day).

User

We took our 2yr old daughter yesterday to walk the Gruffalo Trail. This is the first time we have been and would definitely recommend it. Our little one was so excited to see which animal she was going to find next. We all thoroughly enjoyed it and we'll be back for sure.

The only downside is that the shop was closed when we were leaving and no one about to ask if we could buy our little one a Gruffalo so we left with a disappointed little girl.

User

We really enjoyed our visit to the Gruffalo Trail with the kids today. I especially want to say thanks in particular to Ranger Paul who helped me and my 2 young kids with a tricky situation with my car nearby. He definitely went above and beyond his usual role, and for that we are very grateful. We will be back for another visit in the future, we'll just be more careful with directions next time

User

We had a lovely afternoon here yesterday. We didn't do the tour but went around ourselves and found it to be a lovely place to go with lots of trails and our 4 yr old thought he was on a wonderful adventure with lots of places all throughout the glen to explore. We took our time and enjoyed the day.

The cafe looked ok but we didn't stay for anything but they had a lovely little book and activity area which our little ones enjoyed after their walk.

User

Visited today with my two girls 5 & 3. This was a lovely way to spend a morning!! We took our wellies and a picnic and had a great time!! Such a beautiful forest, not one piece of rubbish did I see!! The walk is beautiful and suitable for buggies and dogs the visitors centre is clean and has a nice looking cafe (although we didn't use it)... toilets were spotless and smelt clean and fresh!!! We will definitely be back!!

User

Thanks to staff at Colin Glen we have a very happy birthday boy after his nerf gun party! I would highly recommend your venue and the craic was 90 x

I took my 3 wee grandaughters for the Gruffalo walk to Colin Glen park .They had a fantastic time loved the Gruffalo characters which can be found along the route .Even better was the natural features river, streams ,boulders , trees, waterfall and the bridges which were greeted with squeals of delight .I really recommend this experience for kids and adults alike .Big bonus was 10,000 steps for me on my fitbit !Important to keep Granny healthy too !

I have walked my dogs here every day for years and find the place is an oasis in Belfast.

Since the Gruffalo Trail opened it has become extremely popular for families and long may it last. It is heartening to see it being enjoyed. It has changed my walking habits as many adults and children demonstrate a fear of dogs therefore I stay away as much as possible from the Gruffalo Trail.

Im delighted to see kayakers on Mila's Lake as well as the anglers.

A down side is the amount of litter and glass left behind by drinkers. I realise there's no solution to this but if there were bins available, maybe they would be used.

Keep up the good work maintaining this wonderful facility.

Ha d a group of 18 kids up today and they loved it. My first time there and the guide was great. Kids had a ball couldnt have said a bad word boyt it . Brought my two 8 year old daughters and we all had a great day. We done the wall, the low ropes and the zip line and we really enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially Jackson and Ryan. They helped the girls around the course. They made them feel safe and were really patient.

User

we did the gruffalo trail yesterday as part of the halloween event. My 2 year old loved getting her photo taken with the various animals along the trail, while the older two loved the pumpkin carving. The tour guide and story teller was lovely so happy friendly and welcoming and took it all in her stride when my 2 year old was a bit disruptive through the story and knocked the toy gruffalo down . I found the toilets to be clean and tidy if a bit cold. The only thing i didn't like was being unable to pay at the shop by card luckily my chum had cash and came to the rescue. Guys you really need a card machine or an atm.

User

Went for a walk along The GRUFFALO Trail ourselves unguided. Great wee trail and we really enjoyed it, however, the trail is not well signposted and what was described as being a 20 minute walk took us almost an hour an a half. We were obviously on the wrong trail but with no signage to help this was almost unavoidable.

Went into the cafe afterwards for a cuppa and something to eat but had to leave with nothing as we had no cash and they don't have a card machine.

User

Well thought out trail with the story of the gruffalo along the way. Good parking facilities small shop and cafe and occasional events hosted . Free and out in fresh air . Leave the games consoles at home and go squirrel hunting 🐿

We visited on 18th July, 4 adults and 8 children ranging 3-10 years. All the kids love the book and really enjoyed finding the characters and getting photos with them.

They also loved playing the in trees and river along the way.

We stopped for a snack by the Gruffalo and were very disappointed by the amount of broken glass around the place - not very safe.

User

The walk was great my 5 year old daughter loved it, the Gruffalo is her favourite book. The only reasons I have marked down a star is cause of the rubbish and the amount of dogs running though off a leash. Other than that I would recommend as my daughter got so excited by every character she saw. Cafe on site has wonderful food and cheap. Gift shop although limited in what they can stock has a good range and reasonably priced.

User

I took an 8 yr old for a walk round the trail and we both really liked it- she enjoyed following the map. It is surprisingly pretty and I will go back with friends for the walk. I agree with some of the reviews that the facilities are a bit run down and the toilets were untidy, but the people on reception were pleasant. I wasn't sure whether the shop was open and I didn't eat in the cafe but it appeared to be busy. Generally I would recommend it and plan to return.

User

Good for a nice afternoon out! Enjoyed the walk round and the kids loved the characters along the way! The car park was packed but we got parked in the next street which was handy enough! Coffee shop selling drinks etc toilets on sight

User

Brought my kids to the Black Mountain Climb today. Great instructors, especially Pearse, who instinctively provided heaps of encouragement , esp to my youngest who was quite hesitant and nervous.

He's a real asset to the place!

Thanks.

User

Definitely not worth the money. On arrival we didn't even get a welcome. Somebody mopping the floor and not much to do. It was a dark, dingy, smelly run down type building. The toilets were disgusting with the bin over flowing. The tour guide was friendly and nice however we could have done the walk ourselves without having to pay a penny. The guide left us after the walk and didn't accompany us back or tell us what was happening next. Not much-v limited art and craft in a dingy room. Nor impressed. Lots of publicity on Facebook for this place but definitely not worth a trip.
