Cookstown High School Former Pupils' Association Description

Cookstown High School is set to relaunch its Former Pupils’ Association. With an increasing number of former High School pupils working in all sectors across the world a Steering Committee has been created to help reconnect them with their old school.

The aims of the association are:

· To promote the values, aims and ethos of Cookstown High School

· To maintain and promote social contacts among all those connected to Cookstown High School

· To support the continued development of Cookstown High School

There was a previous Former Pupils’ Association which organised social events and assisted with the publication of the school magazine but it seems to have wound up in the late 1950s. The present generation of former pupils is very excited about this new venture.

The project is being led by Canon Wilfred Young OBE who served as Headmaster of the High School from 1970 to 1991. Planning meetings have been ongoing in the school since early summer and the officers of the Steering Committee are Chairman, Canon Young, Treasurer Mr Randal McKinney and Secretary Ms Diane McCormick .

Membership of the Association is open to anyone who has attended Cookstown High School or Cookstown County Secondary Intermediate School or been a member of staff of either school. The Steering Committee anticipates quite a bit of interest and already the circle of those who have expressed an interest is expanding rapidly.

There are ambitious plans for social events, school reunions and special events with guest speakers particularly of former pupils, so many of whom have gone on to give leadership in many diverse fields. At present the Steering Committee is building the Association’s membership base ahead of a formal launch event. An application form can be downloaded from here.

Speaking of the development Canon Young said, “Cookstown High School is a prestigious school with an impressive history. So many former pupils have gone on to lead such distinguished careers. Many people have made friends for life at school and we want to harness all that to keep people in contact with each other, to promote the values of the school and continue the school’s development long into the future. “
