Whilst the proposed ban on the sale of house coal and wet wood will not yet affect Northern Ireland it is refreshing to see the UK Government taking a stand against fuels which should NEVER be burned in your stove. It is a fact that wet wood produces only a fraction of the heat as dry wood and will coat your stove, glass and flue with tarry creosote, increasing the risk of chimney fires. House coal is capable of blocking a chimney in a matter of weeks, leading to an increased risk of Carbon Monoxide poisoning and chimney fires. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51581817

We have been receiving a large number of calls from people who are looking to have their chimneys swept. Co Down Stoves & Flues do not sweep chimneys. We only recommend Northern Ireland Association of Chimney Sweeps, all the NIACS sweeps are TRAINED, REGISTERED and most importantly INSURED. https://niacs.co.uk

Every year as a family we make up gift-shoe-boxes for children and I am sharing this video in case any of our customers or friends would like to get involved with this appeal. I am more than happy if anyone would like to drop a filled box or any items that could be put into a box to help spread a little happiness to children in need abroad. I will be delivering the filled boxes to the Drop Inn charity shop in Banbridge during the week commencing Monday 4th November. The charity ask for a £3 donation to cover delivery cost and request that the lid and bottom of the box are wrapped separately so the contents can be checked before being sent out. A list of suggested items can be found on their website - link in the comments below. CDSF do not have any affiliation (religious or otherwise) with this organisation.

We regularly receive enquiries from people who are experiencing problems with their stove despite there seemingly being no issue with the installation and having the chimney cleaned regularly. Most of the time the issue is fuel quality, if the wood is 'sizzling' as it burns and the fire goes out when the stove is turned down, if there is a strong smell from the stove or significant tarring of the glass or inside of the stove then it is a fuel issue. You do not need to buy kiln dried wood, properly seasoned hardwood is less better value and more environmentally friendly. The core of the wood should measure 20% moisture or less. When buying wood do not be embarrassed to ask the seller to split a log to allow you to test it. We sell handy digital moisture meters in our showroom if you need one.

Does your stove installation meet Building Control standards? We have had 6 calls this week already from people who are selling their homes and have been asked by Solicitors acting on behalf of buyers to have their stove checked and commissioned so Building Control will issue a completion certificate. Many of these installations DO NOT meet basic requirements regarding ventilation, minimum clearance to combustibles and hearth size. Many DO NOT have a working carbon monoxid...e (CO) detector fitted, which is mandatory with all stove installations. We have seen oversized stoves squeezed into tiny alcoves and incorrectly sized or poorly fitted flue components. In the first instance we can carry out a StoveCheck to ensure the installation is SAFE, if so we can commission the stove on the same day. If not we can advise what needs to be done to rectify any issues and can advise on costs, including commissioning. Contact our showroom on 02844811783 if you would ike to arrange an inspection.
