Crumlin Road Gaol Description

Crumlin Road Gaol is a historic Victorian-era prison which was a working gaol for over 150 years. In that time it saw children as young as ten pass through the gates as inmates. It has housed prisoners through times of severe punishment, world wars, and political conflicts. Sixteen years after its closure, the gaol opened to the public.
The Gaol is open 7 days a week with tours running every 30 minutes from 10. 00am to 4. 30pm. Tours last approximately 70 minutes, and in that time you will be taken on a journey through history by one of our knowledgeable guides.

Adults: £9. 00
Child (5 - 15yrs): £6. 50
Concession: £8. 00
Careers: £8. 00
Family: £22. 00 (2 Adults & 2 Children)

If you'd like to book tickets you can call 028 9074 1500 for availability or use our website, http://www. crumlinroadgaol.com/.

Visitors start their journey in the reception area, where prisoners were first processed. You will then be taken to the legendary Crumlin Road tunnel where inmates in Victorian times made their way into gaol to serve their harsh sentence, and prisoners during the ‘Troubles’ met on their way to and from the courthouse. From there you are taken to the ‘Long Hall’ where you step inside the Governor’s Office and learn the fate of the prisoners who were called to see the man in charge. When you enter the austere and darkly stunning Gaol, you will learn of the variety of inmates who served their time in each of the four wings. A walk down C Wing will be a journey through history as each of the cells change according to the various eras throughout it’s time. You will discover the incredible events that led to the Gaol’s closure before following the footsteps of the condemned prisoner into his cell, the execution room, and finally to the resting place of the prisoners who still remain.

Done the historical tour? If you’re courageous enough, come back for our Paranormal Tours! A member of the N. I Paranormal Society will take you into paranormally active areas of the gaol where you may experience the residents of the gaol who still stayed behind. Tours run in the evening. Check our website or call for availability.

Planning a party? Crumlin Road Gaol now hosts events! From small gatherings to conferences and weddings, we can cater for all your needs. Call for pricing /availability.

We had a tour with Terry this morning and it was just brilliant. Loads of information about the history of the gaol including a very balanced approach to the troubles. Was fantastic to be able to get inside the tunnel under the Crumlin Rd too.

We attended a strongman event in the afternoon and it is one of the best venues we’ve seen for these competitions (we’ve been to a few). Great set up and lovely helpful staff all round.

User

We had a really interesting and informative tour of the Gaol with Roy as our guide. He was full of facts and made it a fun tour. We’d definitely come again. Well done Roy and the rest of the staff for giving us a great afternoon

User

We had a great tour of crumlin road gaol yesterday! It was really interesting to find so much out about the history of the jail. Hannah was a great tour guide and very knowledgeable.

User

Was at a wedding party. Brilliant place, food excellent. Would love to go back and do the tour, fascinating place.

User

Very informative and interesting tour. The tour guide, Claire, held the groups attention very well and looked after everyone. Perfect length for a tour and got to see round a good bit of it and allowed to take pictures. Highly recommended especially on a wet day in Belfast.

User

Took the tour last weekend while in Belfast for the weekend. Tour was great, very interesting and I must compliment our Tour Guide, Conor. He was fantastic, great knowledge for any questions asked. He was able to set an atmosphere to suit the tours surroundings, something not always seen by tour guides. Compliments to the running if this attraction.

User

Took ma 16 and 12 year old and it was highlight of their time in Belfast ... Tour with Terry was very informative while a few laughs along the way... The gaol itself was very impressive and brilliantly restored .... Definately worth the money....

User

The Crum as the jail is called is a very interesting place to visit. The tour was wonderful, they have done a great job with preserving the history and the tour guides are very knowledgeable and provide great info about what went on in the jail. We also ate at the restaurant and the coffee shop, both provided excellent food and service.

User

Really interesting tour and Ciaran, our guide, was great. Quite atmospheric and informative. Delicious food and Guinness in restaurant and really good value too. Guinness was the best we had in Belfast! Be sure to eat there

User

Our tour guide Tricia was amazing. Very fluid and sincere when telling us the very sad history of the Crumlin. Well worth a visit. It's a very emotional tour to say the least. Xx

User

My wife and I did the tour here with 5 or 6 other people, it was outstanding. Our guide was Harry, he certainly knew his stuff, especially about the early years of the Gaol. His presentation was very good, including a touch of drama where required. We ate in the restaurant after, good quality food with excellent service. Including our gig it was great value.

User

I’m ashamed to say that I live in Northern Ireland and had never been here until last week. By far one of the best attractions in Belfast. I went on the walking tour with Rory as our guide. He was both well spoken and informative. Everything is clearly laid out and the coffee shop food was lovely. I will definitely go again.

User

Had a great time here. Did the tour, dinner and concert. Really interesting tour, food was lovely and the concert was great! Will definitely be back😇

User

Great tour given by Terry? Fabulous knowledge of the history, so great they've preserved many areas of the jail. Quite thought provoking at times. Definately a highlight of my trip to Belfast

User

Great experience with Terry (or was it Frank ;) ) as our guide. It portrayed the realities that the inmates faced and gave a very balanced perspective to the visit. The dramatic effects at one part (won’t spoil it for others) was quite moving. Terry’s energy made the tour excellent and the place itself was a must see attraction. Well done. Highly recommended.

User

Fantastic trip, Conor the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the prison and made the tour vet enjoyable, well worth the trip. The food in the restaurant was delicious, top marks to the chef and the waiters.

User

Fantastic tour. Rory was very knowledgeable about the history of the place and was a great guide. Fascinating history - the tour shows the use of the gaol over the years. Definitely one to visit when in Belfast.

User

Fantastic Guided Tour, great history explained clearly. Interesting & plenty to see & learn. Guide was very good & coffee shop good coffees and helpful. Would recommend a visit.

User

Excellent attraction. I'm not that keen on guided tours as sometimes they can be a bit long winded. Our tour guide Terry, though, did a great job and made it really interesting and fun. Loved his sense of humour. One of the highlights of the City bus tour. Would highly recommend it.
