An Droichead have just finished recruiting for 5 new posts – a Deputy Manager, two Play Assistants and two Room Supervisors – for our new Day Care service that will provide wrap-around care to families in our nursery, with additional care for families with children in Scoil an Droichid. Describing this as another significant development in An Droichead’s mission to support and grow the Irish language community in South and East Belfast, An Droichead Príomhfheidhmeannach Pól Deeds said:

“Parents of children in the school (Scoil an Droichid) can avail of our afterschool and holiday schemes. This new day care will provide breakfast club care to them as well. But for parents of children in the naíonra and pre-school there has not been any childcare on site in the afternoon, until now. Now we will be able to provide high quality care throughout the year between the hours of 8am and 6pm every week day.

“We have been impressed with the take-up in the service, and we are advising any parents who haven’t contacted us to enquire about a place to do so as soon as possible to ensure they aren’t disappointed. ”

“We carried out some improvements to the building, our registration of the new service with social services is in the final stages, and we have just recruited five extremely competent and experienced childcare workers. Our Deputy Manager, Sorcha Campbell, who has supervised An Droichead’s Nursery for the last number of years and who has been central in developing the new day care service, will be in charge of the day care. Sorcha has two new Room Supervisors and two new Play Assistants complementing the current naíonra team who will continue to provide the naíonra service to children in preparation for their progress through the pre-school and the school (the naíonra is currently full to capacity for the 13 /14 year with a waiting list). The day care will fit seamlessly around the naíonra and pre-school times, making full use of our purpose-built, award-winning childcare facility, and running alongside the afterschool in the afternoon. ”

Our purpose-built childcare centre came runner up in a prestigious design competition in 2002. Coming second out of over 800 nominees, the Lárionad was recognised for it’s unique design and layout. We have also been awarded a quality assurance ‘kite mark’ by Playboard for our childcare provision.



An Droichead won the overall top prize in the Glór na nGael competition twice in the past 8 years. This annual competition assesses the work of Irish language organisations around Ireland, and recognises the best project in Ireland with a cash prize of £40, 000 and the Glór na nGael Trophy. An Droichead won the Trophy in 2005, later winning the Ulster title in 2006, the youth award and Conradh na Gaeilge award for Irish language activism in 2008, and the overall top prize again in 2009.
