Taking inspiration from Dementia NI member Dorothy's fabulous poems, participants were encouraged to reflect on their learnings from day one of the Training for Dementia Informed Practice and return on the second morning with a poem that they had been inspired to write. Below is a poem penned by Orla Matthews, Nursing Innovation team in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. Thank you so much to Orla for allowing us to share your work. Let us know what you think everyone...!
When We Listen
A loaded word of dread and shame, For months he couldn’t say it’s name, The stigma from the public eye, “I have dementia? NO! Not I!” At first came fear, unknown and worry. Would it take him slow or in a hurry? Afraid that people wouldn’t see, He’s still himself, he still is he.
But arms were wrapped around him by, His fellow friends, DEMENTIA NI. They listened, gave a helping hand To help those around him understand. Things may have changed and yes that’s true, But lots remain and you’re still you! So he stood tall and he stood brave And laughed dementia in the face!
“A challenge that I’ll take on strong, It will not beat me, I’ll carry on, As long as possible with my family And all the things that matter to me. Some days aren’t bad, some days aren’t great Some things are hard to navigate. The healthcare system could be better, Let’s join the dots and work together. There is so much for you to learn, And I will help you in good turn! I’ll live with this and share my story Of dementia; the pain and glory.
It’s not just loss of memory Daily things can be tricky for me Loud noises now distress me so, Please keep it simple, safe and slow. I may not find the words at ease, But let me tell my story please, You’ll find that as we talk together, I’m still your friend, your father, brother.
So I’ll still dance and sing a song, I’ll share my poems with everyone, To help the people understand, That living well needs to be planned.
These things that may effect my life Might bring me joy, might bring me strife So will you listen to my plea, Just help me live, and still be me.

Over the past two days, Dementia NI members have been delighted to be involved in a training partnership with Ulster University and North West Regional College delivering two days training for Dementia Informed practice. Dementia NI members assisted in the discussions around dementia awareness and receiving a diagnosis, and their experiences of health and social care practice.
A massive thank you to Ulster University for this fantastic collaboration and shared learning opportunity. Thank you also to each and every one of the students who were so engaged and enthusiastic over the course of the two days. We look forward to working with you all again in the future.

Today Dementia NI group members Frances, Glenn, Irene and Allison are at Queen's University Belfast with Empowerment Officer Ashleigh, to continue a our work on the development of the dementia game. A few weeks ago Dr Gary Mitchell from Queen's came to gather feedback from Dementia NI groups across NI in preparation for the development of a new game which aims to help educate the public on the perception of dementia.
Today our focus groups which included Melvin Bell from Foc...us Games LTD, Professors and Doctors of Nursing as well as some very brilliant nursing students.
As you can see from the pictures we’ve had some really good discussions as our members shared their thoughts and feelings as the experts living with dementia.
The invaluable feedback gathered so far is now being integrated into the themes that will be included within the game. Thank you to QUB School of Nursing and Midwifery for inviting us along and for trying to change the public perception of dementia through the development of this exciting new game! We can't wait for the next steps and to eventually play!
