Downpatrick And County Down Railway

About Downpatrick And County Down Railway

Ireland's only full-size heritage railway, north or south, restoring and running steam trains in St. Patrick's Country. We are a registered charity (NIC 101640) and are operated entirely by volunteers.

Downpatrick And County Down Railway Description

The Downpatrick and County Down Railway operates trains through the drumlin countryside of County Down - St. Patrick's Country - over the Quoile River and under the graceful Down Cathedral.

With a mix of steam and diesel trains, as well as vintage carriages, museums, and a signal cabin, there's plenty for train fans of all ages - from wee kids to "big kids". Run by volunteers, society membership entitles you to free travel.

O&K No.1 with our two-carriage 'summer' setup, currently Park Royal No. 1944 and BCDR composite No. 148, sits in the platform at Downpatrick station on Monday afternoon.

The view from the diesel locomotive yesterday as the last steam train of the day rolls into Downpatrick.
The diesel was waiting to return vintage BCDR carriage No. 148 to the safe and dry carriage gallery after the May Day steam trains.

Our museum curator Neil doesn't find our latest exhibit very absorbing - but at least it's not a bog-standard donation. He thought we were pulling his chain at first, and said it was definitely no good for our steam loco Number 1. Yes, he's a real party pooper our Neil, he's even a bit potty-mouthed at times, he said it really belongs behind closed doors.
It's not soft, strong, or very very long, but we're sure to wipe away the competition with this, so after a few runs up an...d down in our trains you should check out our collection - if you've paid your fares you won't need to spend a penny to see this.
So as you can see, our lovely vintage carriages weren't the only shiny thing at the railway today, just look at this high quality genuine UTA toilet roll.
We hope to plop it on display soon.

Today’s trainee fireman, Jonathan, is putting the kettle on - he must be expecting visitors! We’re running steam trains today from 1pm to 4pm, and there’s no better way to spend a May Day than by taking a vintage train trip to Inch Abbey.

User

Tonight’s Throwback Thursday takes us to the Loop Platform back in 2007. The two Great Southern & Western Railway vehicles at the front of the train (carriage No. 836 and locomotive No. 90) certainly look well together, especially with the Loop Platform’s distinctive canopy forming the backdrop.
Today both vehicles are on display in the Carriage Gallery, though 836 is known to wander outside from time to time on public trains. 90 meanwhile is next in the queue for a return to steam, so hopefully we’ll be able to recreate this scene sometime in the near future.

If you have 10 minutes spare today, watch this lovely video from Cavan and Leitrim Railway at Dromod, telling the story of the restoration of their steam locomotive 'Nancy'.
DCDR are happy we played a very small part in the story. This should be an inspiration to anyone looking at a 'rusty wreck' for restoration, it's as big a project as any of the worst 'Barry wrecks' from GB preservation.
Micheal & his team can be very proud of this - well done to them all and all of their supporters!

User

It's great to see someone who is really 'at one' with the task in hand.
Carriage volunteer Niall enters a state of Zen before he continues work on the roof of ex-UTA carriage No. 728 yesterday. He's a happy wee man.
Now sssssh, while he gets into the right frame of mind.

User

We’ve reached another milestone in our restoration of carriage 728 - we’re finally getting the canvas down on the roof.
A number of our volunteers, including quite a few members of our loco crew, spent today laying and fastening the protective underlay and then the final canvas. We’re using metal fishplates to weigh the outer layer down in order to get rid of the creases before we actually nail it in place.
Today’s blitz on the coach was a lot of hard work, but it could have ...been done a lot faster if we had a few more helping hands. We’re always looking for more volunteers - no experience is ever necessary, and it’s always good fun!

We have another BCDR loco for this #ThrowbackThursday, and this time we’re in Newcastle at around 1946. This photo from the O'Sullivan collection provides a wonderfully detailed view of a 4-4-2T in service.
Although built to a no-frills specification, these Beyer-Peacock locos were the mainstay of passenger services across the County Down network and performed impeccably in spite of their heavy loads and frequent station stops. Introduced in 1901, their handsome and slender design made them an instantly-recognisable icon of 'our wee railway’. No. 18’s classmate, No. 30, continues to delight thousands of people each year on display at the Ulster Transport Museum.
Surely one of these would be the perfect candidate to haul our genuine BCDR carriages? We can only dream for now, but maybe one day...!

User

You meet all sorts of celebrities at our railway on a sunny afternoon. We were blessed with a duo of chairmen towards the end of the day on Monday.
John McKegney, chairman of the Railway Preservation Railway Preservation Society of Ireland popped in to enjoy the combination of steam, beautiful vintage carriages and sunshine on the last of our three Easter Eggspress days. We even forced him to take a footplate ride in the steam loco (not that it was hard to do so!)
Here we see John (right) with DCDR Chairman Robert Gardiner, all smiles before the train departed.

User

Our most famous poster boy George spots a rival on a new poster in our buffet train. Innis can try hard, but he can only aspire to be as popular as the original and the best!

User

A big thank you to everyone who travelled on our Easter Eggspress trains this weekend, we hope you enjoyed the word hunt and your Easter Eggs.
The poor Easter Bunny was well and truly knackered by the end of the weekend!

User

The crowds waiting for the first Easter Eggspress train of the day. It’s another scorcher today!

User

These Easter Bunnies are looking forward to today's steam trains, and we hope you are too! Doors open at 13:00 for our third and final day of Easter running.

User

Phew what a scorcher! Easter Sunday was a glorious sunny day and our railway was PACKED! Thank you to everyone who came to see us and experience vintage steam trains at their best today.
One more day of Easter trains to go, it's not too late to come and see us. Trains depart from 1:30pm-4pm on Easter Monday, and you can pay on arrival if you're too late for online booking.

User

We found this sparkly little pink cap in our car park at the end of the day today - if this is yours then please come down to the railway to claim it!
It really doesn't suit our engine drivers, so we hope it gets back to its proper owner soon.

User

Do you fancy an easter egg? Well our eggspress service can get you to your egg in record steaming time from Inch Abbey in the glorious sunshine this Easter Sunday ;)

User

Getting ready for day two of The Easter Eggspress!

Went today with my husband and my daughter to see Santa. We had a wonderful day. The staff and everyone we met were so friendly. Santa was great. Abigail is at that age where she is still a bit uncertain and Santa made her feel so relaxed. She was beaming when she came out. Thank you all so much for making today so special and magical. We will be recommending you and hope to return again soon.

User

User

We had such a fantastic day at the Christmas event last week! My daughter has a cage on her leg at the moment and was unable to walk due to an infection and the staff went out of their way to make sure Abbie saw everything, Santa came out to her specially and we were able to go in by the exit so she didn't miss out. Also surprised her with a bag of gifts. We couldn't believe most of these people are volunteers!

We can't thank you all enough for making it so special.

User

We had brilliant visit today, really enjoyed the train journey and looking around the Museum. The staff/volunteers are really lovely, they can’t do enough for you and are great with children.

User

Was a delightful trip to Inch station and back, despite being so busy! We bought tickets, then visited the museum upstairs. There was a model railway in operation, which the kids all seemed to love. We visited the workshop and spoke to a volunteer who was very enthusiastic about the work they did. The next she'd held a few trains and carriages to explore how things have changed. We then set off for our journey to Inch, where the buffet car had refreshments for sale. The ticket allowed you to spend all day on the train if you wanted!! It was all very interesting to see and learn about, especially as it only runs through the volunteers. Fantastic fun!!

User

Visited here today with my sister and son for the Christmas experience. Fantastic day staff were very friendly and helpful. Santa was great and the presents were very good. Refreshments were really reasonably priced. Will definitely be back. What a fantastic way to get you in the Christmas spirit. Thanks so much.

I was there earlier today. My young man who is 8 and who has autism was the reason we came. He loves the film Polar Express and his favourite pastime is trains. Your staff were so lovely, and spent so much time talking about the history of some of the trains etc. to us parents. So so knowledgeable. I was in awe and will be back. What a great museum. The Lapland express is one I'll be coming back to. Another great autism friendly place. Thanks to all of you. You really all do fantastic work and it doesn't go unappreciated

User

I was meant to write a review after my trip on Sunday so only getting to do it now.

Myself and partner and 6 year old daughter went on the Lapland Express and it was wonderful. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone that has booked. From the whole arrival everything was all systematically looked after. The staff were absolutely lovely people, all putting their volunteered time into hosting a fantastic event for every child. My daughter had never seen Santa before as always had a fear. So I'm proud to say it was not like this here!! The santa was so welcoming to all the little children and spent time with every child and even coming out to socialise with the families before departure. Thank you to everyone at Downpatrick Railway. Your time does pay off as you made a lasting memory for my daughter. Thanks again. Back next year!
