Enniskillen Castle: Fermanagh County Museum Description

Enniskillen Castle, situated beside the River Erne in County Fermanagh, was built almost 600 years ago by Gaelic Maguires. Guarding one of the few passes into Ulster, it was strategically important throughout its history. It was back to 837 AD this morning, and the Vikings are about to attack the Monastery on Devenish Island. Good fun with P6 Holy Trinity this morning who visited the Viking house, took part in an archaeological dig and made some terrific brooches. #vikings #holytrinityenniskillen

It was Vikings again this morning for this group from Holy Trinity Primary, Enniskillen. Did you know that Devenish Island was raided by the Vikings, once in 837 and then burned in 1157. During Viking raids, monks would hide both themselves and their valuable chalices, crosses and gold in the tower’s highest point.

It was great to have 3 classes from Holy Trinity Primary School, Enniskillen, visit us on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week. It was all about castles, banquets, quill writing and our medieval siege machines.
Did you know that one of the siege machines 'the trebuchet' was used to hurl huge objects to breach the castle walls. Large rocks and stones were the main ammunition but there is evidence of more unusual material. Manure and dead animals were also hurled by the ma...chines into the besieged castle to spread disease!
Pigs were often picked as the animal of choice as they flew well in the air and were highly diseased. Did you ever wonder where the saying 'when pigs fly' comes from? Well now you know!
