Two thirds of drivers think cyclists are inconsiderate A recent study has revealed that two thirds of UK motorists think cyclists are inconsiderate road users.
The AA Charitable Trust surveyed nearly 21,000 drivers, 66% of which thought cyclists lacked consideration for others on the road.
... Despite this, a massive 95% agree that cyclists are vulnerable on the road and should always be given space. 93% of respondents said they always look out for cyclists, compared to 89% five years ago.
However, the number of motorists who have been surprised by an unseen cyclist has also risen. In five years, the number of drives caught out by a cyclist suddenly appearing “from nowhere” has increased from 55% in 2014, to 65%. According to government statistics, ‘failure to look’ was a factor in 39% of accidents.
Discussing the survey results, Edmund King, director of the AA Charitable Trust, said, “Our new research shows there is still some way to go in terms of ensuring everyone on the road looks out for each other,”
“On the roads it should never be a case of drivers versus cyclists or motorcyclists. Everyone is on the road to get somewhere and by looking out for each other we can ensure we do so safely.
“It is disappointing that two thirds of drivers feel cyclists are inconsiderate and this shows that more needs to be done by drivers and cyclists to co-exist safely and peacefully. The irony is that most cyclists are drivers and many drivers are cyclists.” or CHILDREN!

Pavement parking probe The Transport Committee has launched an inquiry to explore the problems of pavement parking in England and consider possible solutions. Parking on pavements can cause problems, particularly for those with visual difficulties, who use mobility aids, or need to navigate footpaths with children. Unpredictable hazards such as cars represent a potential danger. ‘Pavement parking’ is when one or more wheels of a vehicle are on the footpath. As well as creat...ing obstacles for people wanting to use footpaths, Councils face additional costs to repair damage to surfaces which are not designed to take the weight of motor vehicles. A mix of criminal and civil sanctions are available to police and local councils to enforce restrictions on pavement parking on private or commercial drivers. Parking on footways or pavements was banned in London in 1974, and it’s prohibited for large goods vehicles across England. The chairman on the Transport Committee said: “This is an area where some people’s actions cause real difficulties for others. Parking on pavements risks the safety of all groups of people from the littlest to the oldest, with differing needs. We want to hear from the public about the difficulties this presents and the solutions on offer.” The Committee is calling for written evidence on the following: The impact of pavement parking The enforcement of pavement parking offences Enforcement and, if necessary, reform of traffic regulation orders need to deal with pavement parking. As pavement parking is devolved, the focus is on England only.

Recent news reports have suggested that hanging items such as air fresheners from your rear-view mirror could land you with a £1,000 fine. What is the truth? The DVSA said: “The DVSA encourages drivers to follow the guidance as laid out in the Highway Code and The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986; Drivers Control 104 with regards to ‘No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive, a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position t...hat he cannot have proper control of the vehicle or have a full view of the road and traffic ahead’. “If it is apparent at the beginning of a driving test that any obstructions are obscuring the driver’s view or potentially causing a distraction then they will be asked to be removed in the interests of the health and safety of the driver, the examiner and the general public.” The Highway Code states: “Windscreen and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision.” If something hanging from your mirror, or a sticker on your windscreen prevents you from having a full view of the road, you could receive an on the spot fine of £100 and three penalty points if it is preventing your from having a full view of the road. The fine could increase to £1,000 if the case goes to court.
