Latest information from the SIA:
Action Counters Terrorism Communities defeat terrorism. With the enduring terrorist threat, it is now more important than ever that everyone plays their part in tackling terrorism. Your actions could save lives.
... That’s why we are supporting the Action Counters Terrorism (ACT) initiative. It is encouraging communities across the country to help the police tackle terrorism and save lives by reporting suspicious behaviour and activity.
Like other criminals, terrorists need to plan. If you see or hear something unusual or suspicious trust your instincts and ACT by reporting it in confidence at gov.uk/ACT- this link opens in a new window or, in an emergency, dial 999.
Read more about ACT: https://act.campaign.gov.uk/
Some examples of suspicious activity or behaviour could potentially include:
Hiring large vehicles or similar for no obvious reasons Buying or storing a large amount of chemicals, fertilisers or gas cylinders for no obvious reasons Taking notes or photos of security arrangements, or inspecting CCTV cameras in an unusual way Looking at extremist material, including on the so-called Dark Web, or sharing and creating content that promotes or glorifies terrorism. Someone receiving deliveries for unusual items bought online. Embracing or actively promoting hateful ideas or an extremist ideology. Possessing firearms or other weapons or showing an interest in obtaining them Holding passports or other documents in different names, for no obvious reasons Anyone who goes away travelling for long periods of time but is vague about where Someone carrying out suspicious or unusual bank transactions Any piece of information could be important, it is better to be safe and report. Remember, trust your instincts and ACT. Action Counters Terrorism.

SIA Update (21.12.2017): Clarification on the use of vascular restraint:
There have been several recent incidents involving door supervisors that have resulted in serious injury, or worse, to members of the public. In some cases, these injuries have been attributed to the use of so-called ‘vascular restraints’. These are also known as ‘chokeholds’, and are extremely dangerous.
These techniques are not part of SIA required training for licensed operatives, and should not be ...used. There appears to be a belief among some operatives that these are legitimate restraints, mandated for use by law enforcement agencies. Please be aware that the use of neck restraints by police officers both here and in the United States has been prohibited for almost 30 years.
For best practice we recommend that security operatives should only use the techniques that they have been trained to use as part of their SIA-linked training on physical intervention. Security operatives must remember that there are always risks associated with using physical intervention. Applying force or pressure to the neck, spine, vital organs, or vulnerable parts of the body can result in serious injury or even death. Such techniques must be avoided.
Physical intervention must always be used as a last resort, and the least forceful intervention practicable must be used.

SIA Update: Seasonal safeguarding reminder for Door Supervisors Christmas is coming, and pubs and clubs will soon be full of Christmas get-togethers, office parties, and people celebrating the arrival of the holidays. It is also a time when some people can find themselves in a dangerous situation, either inside a venue or out on the streets, and in need of extra protection.
Door supervisors can make a big difference to the outcome of a night out by intervening to assist a vu...lnerable person in trouble and helping them to make it home safe.
We want to reinforce some of the key messages from our SIA-mandated door supervisor training and emphasise the importance of safeguarding vulnerable people in the night-time economy.
How can a door supervisor help to keep vulnerable people safe? Recognise the risks to vulnerable people being ejected from, or refused entry to a venue, the risks include: Being under the influence of drink or drugs Being assaulted Being alone Receiving unwanted attention Domestic violence Being too young to look after themselves Becoming the target of a sexual predator
What actions can be taken by a door supervisor to protect vulnerable people? Call a friend or relative to assist them Call a licensed taxi to take them home Use a ‘safe haven’ Ask street pastors or street marshals to assist Call the police Can you recognise behaviours that could indicate potential sexual predators? These often include: A lone male seen pestering a customer or member of staff A heavily intoxicated female leaving with a male A regular attendee frequently leaving with different intoxicated females Finding a date-rape type drug on a person during a search

SIA update: Scheduled System Maintenance
Our (SIA) online licensing system won't be available this weekend
... We're closing down our online licensing system for part of the weekend for planned maintenance. This shutdown will allow us to carry out work to the system that will improve the speed and stability of our online services.
The maintenance work will start at 6 p.m. on the evening of Saturday 22 July, and the system will be up again at 6 a.m. on the morning of Monday 24 July.
While the system is down, customers won't be able to make licence applications. Applicants won't be able to log into their online accounts to follow the progress of their applications.

SIA News and Updates:
Terrorism Threat: Stay Vigilant
23 May 2017
... In response to the recent events in Manchester, we want to reinforce and emphasise the importance of vigilance and of reporting any concerns to the anti-terrorist hotline. The current UK threat level for international terrorism is: SEVERE.This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely.
If you see or hear anything that could be terrorist-related trust your instincts and call the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.
All SIA approved qualifications include counter-terrorism awareness, including looking out for hostile reconnaissance.
The following guidance is taken from National Counter Terrorism Office (NaCTSO) recently launched publication ‘the National Stakeholder Menu of Tactical Options’.
Be proactive in challenging visitors, vehicles and anything out of place and consider the following options particularly around crowded places, night time economy and iconic sites:
Review patrol strategy (be unpredictable). Adopt high visibility clothing; Brigade resources with neighbouring contracts/buildings; Report any suspicious activity in a timely manner; Early reporting of suspected hostile reconnaissance is vital in combating terrorism; Implement communication links with surrounding premises to pass on information about suspicious activity/behaviour; Consider closing non-essential access and exit points; Focus CCTV on all communal areas and vulnerable points; Ensure CCTV is fit for purpose.
We recommend that security operatives refresh themselves with how to be vigilant by watching the video ‘Personnel security - Eyes Wide Open’ by the Centre for the Protection for National Infrastructure (CPNI). The following resources are available:
Watch the video: Personnel Security - Eyes Wide Open. (Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTFNYtKf6 m8).
Download the guidance: Protecting crowded places from terrorism. (Link: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections /crowded-places).
