"Projects like this, with all of its unique methodologies and milestones, don’t come along very often."
Stephen McCaffrey, Project Director on the Northern Spire bridge, has praised the vision of Sunderland City Council and paid tribute to the "amazing team" behind the newly-completed, £117m project in Sunderland.
For more reaction to the Northern Spire project which officially opened to traffic yesterday, see our website: ... https://www.farrans.com/…/northern-spir e-bridge-in-sunderla…

The first cars to drive over the bridge are two Nissans, made in the city. It is hoped that the £117m bridge will make dramatic improvements to the commuter network in the city, easing congestion and promoting further regeneration across the North East.

…And it’s open!
It’s been three years, 2000 people and 1 million work hours in the making but Wednesday 29th August 2018 marks the day that the Northern Spire bridge in Sunderland officially opened to traffic!
Farrans Project Director, Stephen McCaffrey, and some of the team were on the ground this morning for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking the completion of the £117m project.
... It comes after pedestrians spent eight hours on the bridge yesterday – walking, cycling and jogging the length of the deck, taking in the stunning views across the River Wear.
Farrans is proud to worked with a wonderful team on this project, to have engaged closely with the local community and to have helped realise the vision of Sunderland City Council in what is, unquestionably, a stunning, new landmark within the city.

Following a presentation earlier this week, Farrans Contracts Manager, David Thompson, said the team at Mynydd y Gwair continue to liaise closely with the emergency services, particularly the Fire and Rescue services.

Following high praise from the Scottish Minister for Transport during a recent visit to site, the Farrans Roadbridge team on the A737 Dalry Bypass were delighted to reach another key milestone on the £31.2m project, with the first of two phases of the bridge being launched over the River Garnock.
The launching operation consisted of pulling a 650T double girder from the assembly area over the River Garnock towards the Glasgow/Ayr railway line and was completed over 9 hours. It represents another significant milestone on the Transport Scotland project as the team progress steadily on the scheme, on target for completion by the end of next year.
