About F.E. Mcwilliam Gallery & Studio
Opened in September 2008, the gallery celebrates the work of the sculptor, Frederick Edward McWilliam, who was born in Newry Street, Banbridge on 30 April 1909.
F.E. Mcwilliam Gallery & Studio Description
After McWilliam’s death on 3rd May 1992, his estate gifted the contents of his studio, originally situated in Holland Park, London, and a number of sculptures to Banbridge District Council. After several years of research a suitable site and funding was found to commence work on a purpose built gallery, sculpture garden and replica of McWilliam’s studio. Designed by Kennedy Fitzgerald and Associates, Belfast, the gallery is conveniently situated on the outskirts of Banbridge and just off the main Belfast to Dublin road.
Featuring a permanent display of McWilliam’s work, temporary exhibitions of Irish and international art, a craft shop, café and Banbridge Tourist Information Centre, the F. E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio attracted over 43, 000 visitors during its first year and continues to attract a wide range of local, national and international visitors.
Reviews
very nice and reasonably priced experience ...
excellent choice and service
We're back today so that should say it all!!!
This gallery is a little bit special. A hidden treasure in an unlikely location. Whether you spend your time there exploring the McWilliam sculpture garden, eating in the lovely café or taking in the latest exhibition in the gallery itself, you'll have a great time. The exhibitions are often challenging and thought provoking in their content. On many occasions that I have been to see them, they have had a link to local artists or local themes. Most recently I saw an exhibition which included pieces by Lowry and Hockney, so it is always a pleasant surprise to discover what is showing there. The exhibitions come in various mediums from painting and pencil drawings to photography, installations and of course sculpture (as this was the home studio of the artist F.E. McWilliam who worked in that medium until he died in 1992)
If you have been visiting the Bandbridge Outlet, it's a few hundred metres away and a lovely escape from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre. It has extensive car parking and also houses a local tourist information centre so you can decide what your next adventure will be after taking in the art.
Such a fantastic and inspiring place to be, quality exhibitions, creative workshops and classes as well as a beautiful Cafe, crafts & gifts, sculptural gardens and Studio. Staff are friendly & informative. Highly recommended!
Once you find it you will never forget this heaven to all things creative and beautiful.
My daughters went to the kids art workshop this morning - they learnt how to decoupage and then produced a decoupage keepsake box. They really enjoyed this activity it was very well organised, the teacher was very good at guiding and helping the children. The setting was ideal - thank-you so much we will definitely be back!
My 3 year old attended an art class and loved it! Amazing value
Lovely gallery and an amazing lunch. Can't wait to return
Great to drop in if you are passing Banbridge. If you are not passing, you have no excuse not to call in. Great exhibitions, good food and coffee and very, very relaxing.
Great spot for a coffee. Excellent space and show.
Great gallery wonderful exhibition of Margaret Clarke paintings Ruth the gallery guide was enthusiastic and engaging
Gerda Frömel Exhibition- very special - on now!
First time being in F.E McWilliam Gallery it was lovely and went into Quails restaurant for abite of lunch, food and service was excellent definitely be back again.
Excellent service and food was amazing great for parking too
A lovely creative space in beautiful surroundings
A hidden gem only a stone's throw from the motorway but a tranquil & stunning gallery with superbly designed gardens. If the sun is shining even better! Food in the cafe is delicious, healthy and made from local
Ingredients cooked to perfection. It certainly won't be my last visit.
Good food, good service but the decor is a bit too 'Spartan' for my tastes!
