Firmus Energy Triathlon Description

Following the hugely successful inaugural triathlon last year, it has been announced that the firmus energy City of Derry triathlon will continue in 2014 and take place on Sunday 13 July. Organised by the North West Triathlon Club and supported once again by the local natural gas company, this year’s event promises to be even bigger and better with more than 600 places up for grabs.

Des Brown, head of marketing for firmus energy, commented: “We are delighted to continue our involvement with the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon. This exciting event is bringing sports such as swimming, cycling and running, to an even wider audience, as well as showcasing NWTC and Derry~Londonderry as leaders in sporting excellence.
“firmus energy has been active across the City since 2006, bringing the environmental and cost-saving benefits of natural gas to homes and businesses. We have laid more than 180 km of pipes and connected around 6, 570 customers along the way.
“Last year’s inaugural event was a great success and brought hundreds of visitors to the City. Registrations are now open for the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon 2014 and we hope that our support will further ‘energise’ the programme of activities around the exciting event. Our employees will be taking part in an active engagement programme across the County in the lead-up to the main event encouraging children to get up and get moving. Swimming, cycling and running are all healthy activities which promote well-being and can help children to get fit and ‘let off steam’ productively. ”

Paul McGilloway, Race Director at NWTC, added: “This event will see experienced triathletes taking part alongside participants who are joining in for fun. Either way, we believe that they will feel a tremendous sense of achievement by taking part.

“The Triathlon, on 13 July, comprises a 750m open water swim in the River Foyle followed by a 20km closed road cycle culminating in a 5km flat run that takes in key attractions around the City including the iconic Peace Bridge. There will be plenty of complementary events throughout the week for children and adults to join in, including a ‘Buddy Swim’ in the Foyle which partners a child with an adult in a competitive race.

“We are delighted that, after more than 30 years of the NWTC, our sport is more popular than ever and we will be encouraging even more people to take part. Thanks to the support from firmus energy, we are able to open up the triathlon to up to 600 entrants this year as well as offering events suitable for all ages and abilities.

“Now is the time to start training and be part of something special. Regular runs, cycles and swims to build your stamina will pay dividends on race day. We will be posting suggested training schedules on our site to guide participants as ‘too much too soon’ is not advisable. ”
