New OWC Aura X SSD's installation problems explained. ============ If the drive is not showing in Disk Utility, there are a couple of things that could be going on. The first thing we would want to check is the OS version that was installed on the computer before installing the Aura SSD. Being a NVMe drive, the Aura SSD does require the computer to have had macOS 10.13 installed prior to the Aura SSD. macOS 10.13 introduced support for NVMe drives, and does update the firm...ware of the computer to support those. If this has not been done, you would need to first update to macOS 10.13 on the stock Apple drive before installing the Aura SSD.
Second, if you have installed macOS 10.13 prior to the installation of the Aura SSD, you will want to make certain you are booting to the correct Recovery Mode. We have noticed some changes with Recovery Mode since High Sierra was released, and normal key presses that would take you to the latest OS version are now taking you to the original OS version. To access the latest OS version from Recovery, you will want to hold down Command + Option + R at boot. This will get you into 10.13 Recovery Mode, which can recognize the Aura SSD properly.
The last thing to check is Disk Utility. With High Sierra and the introduction of APFS, Disk Utility is no longer showing unformatted disks properly. To fix this, you will need to select the View button on the top left side of Disk Utility, and select All Devices. Once you have changed the view, exit Disk Utility, and reopen it. The Aura SSD should be visible. We have experienced cases in our own testing where you may need to exit and reopen Disk Utility multiple times. I believe 4 was the max we have seen. The other option would be formatting the disk in Terminal. ===============================
