About Gilmore Canine Therapy - Galen Myotherapy

Galen Myotherapy is a specific complementary therapy specialising in the treatment of damaged or injured muscle and allied soft tissue. Muscle pain is underestimated and difficult to treat, we work using specialised knowledge and training specifically within this area.
Muscular issues can manifest themselves in many different ways. The pain can cause stress that will have a negative effect on how the dog functions both physically and psychologically.
Galen Myotherapy promotes muscle function. This is achieved through easing congestions within the fibres caused through injury, compensatory or repetitive strain issues.
Injury within the muscle fibre can cause inappropriate scarring, which will cause stress over the joints they articulate. By identifying then treating effected muscles and muscle groups, joint function can be improved and optimum 'range of movement' for each condition or situation being achieved. This results in improved mobility, performance and reduction in pain perception therefore reducing stress and allied symptoms.
By treating the secondary and /or compensatory issues, Galen Myotherapy can be part of a highly effective management programme for supporting the following conditions;
- Osteoarthritis
- HIp /Elbow Dysplasia
- CDRM
- Cruciate issues
- OCD
- Spondylitis.

As a Galen Canine Myotherapist I treat compensatory muscle problems.
Day to day activities, i.e. running, chasing ball activities, repetitive activities can all lead to compensatory issues in muscles, also conditions such as Arthritis, Hip/Elbow Dysplasia, Osteoarthritis.
Massage is beneficial to prevention of injury as well as helping treatment after overuse and injury.

How dogs move
A Galen colleague has shared this short film on how Dogs move.

Over a period of time, the stresses placed on the soft tissue through repetitive strain, posture, exercise or overuse (this can happen whilst the dog is in puppy years). The change in the fascia will affect the bones and joints. Therefore it is very important to release the myofascial stress during treatments. As the therapist palpates and massages the fascia they can detect a change in the texture, elasticity of the fascia. With treatment this can be realigned and eased to ensure the dog has ease in movement.

Looking forward to meeting all the dogs and their owners. Galen Canine Myotherapy is very effective in supporting a dogs performance, recovery and well-being. This can be from improving or supporting performance in working and active sporting dogs, post operative recovery, muscular skeletal problems e.g. hip/elbow dysplasia, osteoarthritis, lameness. #canicross #dogevents #galenmyotherapy #activedogs

Benefits of Myotherapy treatment for Active, Sporting dogs.
The movements of the therapists hands on the dog’s skin has a stimulating effect on the peripheral nerves, they in turn give feedback to the brain regarding pressure, temperature or movement such as stretching. With the heat from the therapists hands this cause the fascia to become pliable, this assists the fascia to envigorate the neurological connections throughout the body. massage reduces anxiety by reducing stress levels (sympathethic) and increasing the parasympathetic response in relaxing the dog. Sports massage improves proprioception and confidence building, preparing for the upcoming event. #galenmyotherapy #activedogs #dogs #canicross #gilmorecaninetherapy

A lovely thank you from Catherine, the owner of Pete
My Lab/Collie/Rotty cross Peter, was diagnosed with arthritis when he was just over 1. He is now 8 takes 20-40mg of Maxitram a day depending on how sore he is. He was always very stiff and was obviously overcompensating to protect his painful joints. I was advised to go to Jane-Marie for Galen Myotherapy and I’m so glad I did.
I loved the fact that it was in a relaxed homely atmosphere and not “clinical’ like a vets office,... he was totally relaxed the whole time and took to Jane-Marie quicker than I have seen him take to anyone. He loves getting treated and gets excited in the car about half a mile away from Jane-Marie’s house as he knows he’s about to get his treatment.
Jane-Marie is great at reading him and when he has had enough in one spot and wants her to move, she seems to know. She explains everything that she is doing and why and I have complete trust in her. I can’t recommend Jane-Marie enough as an Animal Therapist. I would trust any of my animals with her (2 dogs & 5 cats) She is a marvel!

This is a great explanation as to why it is really important not to over exercise puppies and young dogs.
