We have two stunning works by Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) in our upcoming Irish Art Auction on Tuesday 16th May @ 7.30pm.

... In the 1930's Jacob Epstein embarked upon a series of landscape and flower studies which were highly unusual in his oeuvre. He was known as an avantgrade sculptor but for a short period he abandoned sculpture all together. The Epping Forest series was completed during a frenetic summer of painting in 1933 in which Epstein completed nearly a hundred works on paper. They were exhibited to great acclaim in London at Arthur Tooth & Son in December 1933. In technique, the Epping Forest series shows an affinity with the plein air painting of the French and British Impressionists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Working with watercolour and gouache, Epstein could work speedily to capture the fleeting effects of nature. In temperament, however, the Epping Forest works have something of a mystical quality (Ref: tate.org.uk/art/artworks/epstein-epping-f orest-t05760). The two works presented for auction are in the original frames with the Arthur Tooth and Sons labels on verso.
