We’re putting the final touches to our newly restored community space named Peggy’s Allotment Garden.🥕🥬 The garden is situated at the rear of Peggy’s Cottage within Hanna’s close and was once a very productive vegetable plot for the Ewart family who lived there. The former plot was overgrown and derelict before the contractors moved in to start the process.🪓 Once completed the garden will be used and maintained by Kilkeel High School Learning and Development pupils, Mourne St...imulus attendees and many more community groups. The garden consists of a tunnel house, tool shed, seating area, 4 large accessible growing beds, rain water butt, composting units and pathways. Our aim is to grow and harvest heritage vegetables, herbs and flowers for consumption by the guests staying in the Close. We also plan to use some of the produce for cookery demonstrations. 🥘🥦 This project was kindly funded by the Halifax Foundation and constructed by G&G Fisher. Before and after. Work has begun on the restoration of Tommy’s cottage at Hanna’s Close. An enthusiastic team arrived on Saturday assisted by the Friends of Hanna's Close volunteer group to strip the old thatched roof in preparation for its replacement. It was truly amazing to see the craftsmanship that went into the original roof. We’re very excited to see the thatchers at work over the next few weeks, feel free to come down and see them at work. We plan to turn this 17th century cottage into our main reception office which will include a fully functioning kitchen with a seating area, a small museum and office space in front of the open fire.
Hanna’s Close is a registered charity run by River Valley Development Association to ensure the preservation of this site for generations to come. #lovemourne
