Hazel Wand Theatre School Description

The Hazel Wand Theatre School was established in 1993 in Omagh, County Tyrone by Sister Aengus Fitzpatrick.

The school caters for young people between 5-19 years old. Classes run on a weekly basis and children attend on a day which suits their age and ability.

Since its inception, Hazel Wand has staged an annual musical. Musicals which have been performed over the years: Annie, Oliver, Love from Judy, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, The Sound of Music, The wizard of Oz, The Boyfriend , My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Les Miserables, Me and My Girl, Mary Poppins, The Aristocats and Shrek.
All students get the opportunity to perform in these shows which are staged for the public in December or January of each year.

Every June, pupils sit graded examinations in a field of their choice - Acting, Duologue, Speech and Drama, etc. These qualifications are awarded by New Era Academy and range from Initial right the way up to Diploma Level. This year, 2 members of The Golden Apples Players (see below) achieved Diplomas in Acting!

Members (including pupils who have not attended the school before) can also achieve GCSE and A level qualifications through the AQA Board. These involve weekly evening classes throughout term time (GCSE - once a week for a year, A Level - twice a week for 2 years and assessed performances at the end of the year (the A Level students perform their final performance in the Strule Arts Centre where friends and family are invited to attend for free).

The latest production was in January 2012 when the school's senior members performed the hilarious comedy musical "Me and My Girl" at St Joseph's Hall, Omagh. Meanwhile, the junior members brought "Shrek Shots' to the stage. These productions were described as "classy", "remarkable" and "of the highest quality" by local audiences.

In the summer of 2012, a new wing of the school was founded - The Golden Apples Players. This group of experienced young actors consist of past pupils of Hazel Wand. Now that they are past the age where they can go to weekly classes within the school, this group of young adults have come together to perform top quality plays in the Omagh! Many of these adults are perusing a professional acting career and feel such a strong affinity with Hazel Wand that they feel it a privilege and an honour to be part of the shows once again. The first production of this group will be The Crucible by Arthur Miller! This iconic American classic shall play at the Strule Arts Centre on Sept 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th!
