Lexham Legal is a corporate and commercial law consultancy, not operating through a solicitors vehicle and so not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Why go independent? Well, the bottom line is that there is usually no real difference for clients whether an adviser practices through a solicitor vehicle or not. I have trained and practiced as a solicitor for many years, I keep up with professional training as if I were a solicitor, I negotiate with solicitors on the same deals, doing the same type of work, and I sign up to the solicitors' core conduct principles. In terms of client redress, I carry the solicitors' required level of professional indemnity insurance and any complaint against me would be handled by the same external body. In another sense, we think being independent can add more synergy to our partnership than you might have with many solicitors. Firstly, because we buy our services on a more open rather than regulated market our overheads are more tailored to a commercial law adviser, and much better value, which clients benefit from. Secondly, because we are not subject to the one-size-fits-all regulation, we can tailor our client-protection measures to what is actually best for the client. And thirdly, as we see regulatory bodies (like governments) growing bigger and bolder, we don't need to worry about death by regulation - instead of looking over our shoulders all the time we can just get on without distraction in providing you with a first class service.
