For the past 12 months we have been discussing and attempting to plan a cycle tour in one of the many countries of the world and now we have finally come up with a suitable destination, Ireland. This coming September we will cycle around our green and friendly country to raise funds for the Foyle Hospice, Derry and also MacMillan Cancer Support. This cycle will give us the opportunity to help those who have to deal with this affliction on a daily basis as well as allowing us to visit some of the many beautiful places in Ireland and meet the local people along the way.
We have already worked out a basic route however we are flexible and would like people to suggest places that we should visit along the way and hopefully we can factor them into our course. We are currently aiming at a distance around 1800km’s over the space of 10 days which sounds crazy but is quiet achievable as we will be averaging 20km /hr and cycling 8-10 hours per day.
We should also be able to travel light as we do not plan to camp and the weather ought to be reasonably mild in September therefore heavy clothes should not be necessary but we will confirm this closer to the time. Along the way we plan to stay with friends, family and anyone that might have space for us so that we can not only see the country but also meet some new people along the way.
Over the coming months we will be providing regular updates on our training progress, diet, route plan, equipment selection and how we will overcome problems that may arise along the way to achieving our goal. We will continue to research appropriate material so that we are prepared for any situation that should occur and will be open to advice or questions from anyone that is interested in any part of our plan.
