Mount Stewart - National Trust

About Mount Stewart - National Trust

Mount Stewart is one of the most inspiring and unusual gardens in the National Trust's ownership.

Mount Stewart - National Trust Description

The garden reflects a rich tapestry of design and great planting artistry that was the hallmark of Edith, Lady Londonderry. The mild climate of Strangford Lough allows astonishing levels of planting experimentation. The formal areas exude a strong Mediterranean feel and resemble an Italian villa landscape; the wooded areas support a range of plants from all corners of the world, ensuring something to see whatever the season.

Engaging tours of the opulent house reveal its fascinating heritage and historic world-famous artefacts and artwork.

Due to the Waggy races event we are expecting a large number of dogs visiting Mount Stewart between 10am and 1pm today. Dogs and their owners will be running on some of our trails through the property. All dogs will be on leads. Good luck to everyone taking part. 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🐕🐩

User

first time at mount stewart today what a beautiful place. The staff were lovely the only thing that disappointed me was that when I presented my childrens blue badge in carpark one (I have two special needs children) I was asked where was the elderly person in my car? I think the staff need reminded that disability is not just for older people, is not always visable and does not always involve a wheel chair! but we had a great time regardless

User

Went for the Alice in Wonderland trail today and ended up staying 6 hours. Time certainly flies when you are having fun here. Beautiful house in beautiful surroundings.

User

We attended The teddy bears picnic on Thursday and found the event to be very well run. Car parking was planned and directed, no ques. Food and entertainment was fantastic and daughter and friends had absolute ball at Donna’s Drama on the lawn which was fantastic and interactive for a range of ages! Then there was treasure hunt of Alice and wonderland! Definitely be back again. Event was wonderful. Staff were all lovely and pleasant. Thank you for a great day

User

Thank you to all involved in the Christmas sessions, we had a wonderful time. I took my great nephew, Jake, for our grand day out, starting with the snowman trail around the lake, with him (almost 3 years old) insisting on taking charge of the map! He was delighted to find each of the snowmen and very excited when we came upon the white stag, and he loved stroking the silky bark on the eucalyptus trees. After lunch we went to the house to be greeted at the front door by an elf, and he quickly became a little awe struck. We went off to the kitchens to decorate gingerbread biscuits and have some refreshments then followed a trail round the house, going to the nursery to write a letter to take to Santa, seeing the elves sleeping quarters then on to meet with Mr & Mrs Claus in a very cosy sitting room. They were lovely, talking to each of the children in turn and incorporating information given on the booking form and elaborating on the children's letters; the children were enthralled. This was a very enjoyable session, it felt relaxed and never once felt as though we were being herded along, it really felt like we were Santa's only visitors. I was looking forward to sharing this experience anyway but it exceeded my expectations. It was an absolute delight. Thank you to everyone involved in the day and for creating the set up, it was a truly magical Christmas experience.

My first time visiting but was with my Dad who has visited on many occasions. Can now see why! The gardens are lovely very peaceful despite many visitors. The house is very interesting and the guides are knowledgeable without being intrusive as you look around. The cafe for lunch was very good too. My only criticism would be that they could have a larger variety of plants for sale. They certainly would sell as you walk away feeling very inspired! Will come again.

User

Just wanted to say thanks so much to all the staff for their amazing service and kindness shown to our family for our son's Naming Ceremony, held at the Temple of the Winds last weekend.

It was a really special day, made moreso by the attention to detail and help shown by the lovely staff.

Thanks also for the yummy finger food provided by the Mount Stewart cafe... everyone commented on it, and it all helped to make it a really memorable and wonderful day.

Thank you so much!

User

Just want to big up the cafe staff in Mount Stewart. I sat down n as soon as this lady clocked me fidgeting with my nursing bra strap n holding my daughter, she was straight over with a glass of water. I fumbled embarassed with my daughters sun hat and said 'sorry im trying to cover up as much as i can' and she said 'don't you worry love, its natural, cows arent made to cover up so why should you. You're doing the best for your baby" i was so taken aback. What a lovely thing to say and do.

User

It’s a really nice walk and it’s really nice to sit and have a chat to your friends and it’s good for schools as well

User

I tried the newly-opened trails yesterday (up past Temple Of The Winds) and was very impressed, obviously a lot of work has gone into them; also some nice new picnic areas, and wood carving at the 'Magic Ink Pot'. However I didn't see one other person in the whole time I was there - hopefully people become aware that these areas are now open, and just as nice a walk as around the gardens and lake.

User

I loved it the grounds are amazing so many walks that you can do and loads of benches to just sit and take in the world around you. The lake is amazing the colours of the trees and the smells omg you can take so many photos but if only you could bottle the smells. It has to be one of the most peaceful places I have been all you can hear is the birds and the wind blowing through the trees its really lovey. The house is beautiful so much love and care has gone into it, it has a lovely homely feel to it and the staff really love their job. My only complaint would be the café and gift shop are quite expensive but then as this is a National Trust property this is to be expected my advice is to do like we did and bring a big pic nic find a good patch of grass in the sun and relax (always making sure you bring your rubbish away with you this is a beautiful spot that does not need to be ruined by people being lazy). This is one place that I will look forward to visiting again :)

User

I love Mount Stewart and all the events they hold are wonderful a great treasure we can enjoy not to be missed

User

I have lived right beside Mount Stewart for 44 years and went for the first time 'ever' yesterday with my Grandkids and family for Halloween and I must say, the staff couldn't have been nicer!!! So very helpful and couldn't do enough for us.... What a beautiful place right on my doorstep. Will definitely be back very soon

User

I absolutely love this place! We've been there twice in the last fortnight and we'll be definitely going now more often. I'm a NT member, so might as well use it as I don't have that far to go to get there. My only advice is that it would be great if there were some liter bins beside the picnic tables or even on the way back. We had a great day there yesterday, a big walk and a picnic beside the ruins of the folly. I had a whole bag of rubbishes. I had to take it back with me to the car and bring it home. It wasn't a big deal, but maybe it's something that Mount Stewart team could think about to improve visitors experience 😉 No matter what I love it anyway 😊

User

Had a wonderful day yesterday at the Teddy Bears picnic. Well organised and though it was busy it didn't feel crowded. The one criticism I would have is the price charged for the bouncy castles. £2.50 a go! More than one child and your purse would be emptied quickly. Other than that it was a great day. Good selection of food vendors if you didn't bring a picnic and lots for kids to do as well as beautiful gardens to explore. Will be back again but will be giving the bouncy castle a a wide berth!

User

Fascinating house ,from the wheelers and dealers who have died there, to the minutiae of family life. The personal details are what make the house so interesting.

The gardens are simply one glorious surprising room after another. My favorite anywhere, right now the spring flowers are adding some spectacular color.

What a pleasure to show off Mount Stewart to visitors from afar.

Fabulous day @ Pet Nose Day on Sunday. Great fun for all the family. Dotty our 15 month old Englishbull terrier loved it from start to finish. First time off the lead with other dogs in the open field and she was so happy. The atmosphere and weather was great and we will definitely be returning next year. Thanks Mount Stewart for a fab day.....great idea!! ☉

Excellent place to visit for a day away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, had a great chat to a ranger there at the birds lookout shelter Gemma was here name she was very informative, and took a great photo of the seals across the Lough, because with me being in a wheelchair I couldn't really see the seals and she even lowered the binoculars for me to have a look,I have a photo I took of a damselfly she told me to put it on your Facebook page coz she said it was an excellent picture.

User

Beaut walks and can have a nice cuppa after. Well worth a visit if you down that way. House tour good too but I prefer outside in the fresh air.

User

An enjoyable outing to Mount Stewart and the first time with my dog. It was a beautiful sunny day and I did the lake walk. When I return I will take to dog to the secured area first and let her off the lead so she is suitably tired and not pulling my arm from its socket on the lake walk I have some lovely photos from my experience.
