Movilla Fishery hosted the annual Newtownards Wildfowlers Association Charity Clay Shoot on Saturday 11th August 2018. This year the nominated charity was the NI Air Ambulance. A total of 89 guns shot the 40 bird Sporting Layout and Pool trap. A great day was had by all, helped by the good weather in the morning. We hope to be able to run the event again next year. The other half of the fishery ran as normal and good bags of fish to 4 1/2 lbs were taken by most anglers. Keith Duncan

Last Sunday 29th July saw a distinct improvement in the fishing at Movilla. All anglers caught fish on a variety of patterns. The water temperature had dropped back from a high of 21c to 17c and the fish were starting to move for the first time in quite a while. This was the worst fishing weather ever at Movilla in 17 years of business and I hope it's gone for good. I look forward to seeing my many angling friends again. Tight lines to everyone, Keith Duncan.

User

Now that the weather is cooling down, the fish are starting to feed at Movilla. Yesterday John Williams caught 15 fish on a Sunburst blob on a fast sink line. He also reported very little weed in most parts of the fishery which is reassuring to staff. The fishery will reopen on Saturday 14th July and tight lines to everyone.

User

The weed has now been cleared out of the lake and we have clear waters for our tight lines.

User

The fishing is hopeless on account of the unseasonal hot weather but the concrete fishing platform for wheelchair users is finally finished. Huge amounts of weed have been taken out of the lake and we now have control of the situation tlbp. The fishery will be closed on 11th, 12th and 13th of July so please don't phone as I will be out of the country at that time. Hopefully the weather will settle and we can get back to some decent fishing before long.

With the unseasonably hot and bright weather the fishing has slowed somewhat at Movilla. But not for everyone, Henry McIlhone caught 13 fish tonight on a Mini Cats Whisker in just a few hours... with a slow retreive on a sink tip line. He made it look so very easy...and so it is if you apply yourself...

Springtime at Movilla

User

Movilla is really bubbling now, top dry fly angler Roy Anderson landed 18 fish today on a Hawthorne fly. Ronnie Douglas also did well with 11 fish on a Connemara Black and Black Pennell. So with the lake on top form and the fish rising steadily it's time to beat a path to Movilla Fishery.

User

Movilla was stocked again yesterday, Wed 17th May with another double stocking of rainbows and blues. These fish once again stirred up the resident fish almost immediately. The lake is now fishing really well and some fish are being taken in the evening on small dries. Time to get the rod out...

User

Movilla returns excellent bags of blues and rainbows to anglers fishing the finest 6 acre lake in Ireland. This morning Thomas Mc Murray caught 14 fish on a Sweetcorn Blob and romped home as top rod for the day. Many fish succumbed to buzzers, gold bead nymphs and small black/olive lures. If you can't catch at Movilla, you won't catch anywhere...lol

User

With the wind in the East today, Movilla fished a bit harder. This didn't stop John Williams romping home in top spot with 23 fish on buzzers. Smashed 4 times, most likely with blue trout on 8lb fluorocarbon. Anglers Roy Gawley and Mark Davidson tied on 10 fish each, again on buzzers. So get tying those buzzers...you're going to need them !

User

Movilla is red hot already ! Big John Bailie landed 25 rainbows and blues today on buzzers, diawl bachs and small olive lures. The blues stripped his reel to the backing every time and the biggest smashed his Orvis Clearwater Rod. I'm lost for words at this point...

User

Movilla Fishery was stocked yesterday with rainbow and blue trout that averaged 2 to 4lbs. This was a double stocking because a supplier let us down on the previous one. Such a large stocking ought to stir up the over wintered fish that had proved difficult to catch recently. Looking forward now to the new season and hoping the weather picks up soon.

User

Movilla Fishery was stocked yesterday with both rainbow and blue trout. These fish were top quality and ranged between 2 and 4lbs. This was a double stocking as we were let down by a supplier and missed our last stocking. In life sometimes it rains...

User

Movilla fished well today to a variety of different methods. Top angler was Russell Proctor with 10 fish to Black & Green lures, with Diawl Bachs on the dropper. Stephen Lee returned a bag of 8 fish all on buzzers, and John Rafferty a more modest catch of 5 fish on blobs. There's always someone who gets it wrong though. One angler decided to fish small dry flies all day, even though there were no flies hatching...Well, the Lord loves a trier...

User

In the past, all the angler had to wear was a long Barbour coat and a pair of thigh waders. He went fishing once a week and was consequently quite a good caster. He caught modest numbers of fish but he was more than happy. Compare this to the angler of today. He has the best of gear but is a poor caster. The reason he is a poor caster is because he rarely goes fishing. This is because he has a mobile phone in his pocket and trust me, the mobile phone is God. The mobile tells him it's going to rain so he does not go fishing. The mobile tells him it's going to be windy so he does not go fishing. The mobile tells him it's going to be cold so he does not go fishing. In fact he hardly ever goes fishing, can't cast properly yet expects to catch big numbers of fish. Recognise anyone ?

User

With the improving weather, the fish are starting to move on the surface. This is most noticeable around midday and the fish are feeding on small buzzers. A size 20 Matt's Midge will catch these surface feeders and I tie and sell these flies. On Teimco hooks with Whiting hackles you can't buy better. The lake will be stocked again this Wednesday and I wish everyone the best of luck.

User

very good place and friendly staff, tks!

User

Haven't been here in 2 years nor fly fished In 2 years, took a run down today and instantly fell in love with the place again, smashing lay out, very helpful and got brilliant advice on how to fish buzzers etc, end up after a slow start and abit of persevering and patients catching 10 trout, can't wait to get bac down, quality fisherie

User

User

User

Was here tail end of last summer & conditions were perfect , was back again yesterday & although breezy & still a bit cold there were plenty of lively / active fish there for the taking , unfortunately I couldn't find the right fly / lure on the day.

Deffinately be back.

Love the layout of this lake. There's a plenty of spots to fish. The bays head out towards the middle of the lak you can fish from the sides of or from the points and a couple of islands to fish to. Not just the typical oval lake. Seats & bins the hole way around the lake. Been twice now and caught a few fish. Picturesque countryside, even spotted 3 big hares! Only criticism is it's a bit weedy in parts. But still highly recommended!

User

Great fishery , set up well always a spot to fish/catch , friendly staff

User

Been here two weekends in a row and caught each time staff and fishermen so helpful and friendly plenty fishing spots to fish from - only downside for me is its weedy in few spots and lot of debris floating at edge of parts of Lake but still able to fish ok - plenty of rubbish bins around the lake very tidy - also has toilets and small tackle shop inside Hut would highly recommend

User

As a fairly inexperienced fisher woman this is the closest I've come to catching a fish in this extremely warm spell of weather. I really appreciated the advice and helpful pointers from Keith the owner (hope I got the name right!) with regard to my casting technique. Not many fishery owners would stand for ages and help you sort the right line and flies for the conditions. The staff here really care about providing a positive fishing experience.

I will return on a better day, when I've practised my cast enough to not embarrass myself :)

User

Myself and mate Normally fish the rivers, so we though we'd give this ago seeing are local river dosent fish on a sunday. Its been my 3rd time here over the years and first for my mate.

For me! not much has changed but both agreed the lake is over killed with weed!

Other anglers where finding it hard going also and drawing a blank. We fished on and after a short time we started hitting fish falling to a size14 gold head Olive nymph, olive dun dry and the black sleech. Total. fish 7 for me and 13 for my mate. Lovely place but killed by weed so be prepared to get snagged if nymphing or pulling lures which i hate with a passion.

I'll stick to the rivers where the real anglers go lol.
